Who Designed the MAME Tokens?
« on: December 26, 2007, 04:52:03 pm »
Any idea who designed the BYOAC token design?  I was looking to make my own custom design and I had some questions:

-  I would simply want my "DeLuSioNaL's Ultra Arcade" logo where it would say MAME on the coin (front) back is fine as is.
-  Does anyone have an original template with the design?  If so, how can I contact the author for permission to modify it and use it for my personal use?
-  How much would it cost for 100 custom made ones?  I contacted the website for the tokens and they never got back to me.  Is it worth the cost?

The coin and my logo are pasted below.  See the intro animation I created here:  http://linkedmedia.tripod.com/delusionalarcade (click on the link on the page)

P.S. - There's no rush as at, I still do not have coin mechs yet.  I will post another topic later in the week about my problems with that... the coin doors won't fit (none that Happ stocks).  But I'll save that for later.

Thanks!

~ DeLuSioNaL

** edit *** changed BYOAC to MAME in the subject.  (Thanks Santoro for pointing out the typo)

From the 2007 token thread.

"Congratulations to MrCurmudgeon for winning both sides of the Token design contest for the '07 tokens."

It's not as simple as coming up with a design and asking for 100 to be made. There's a minimum order amount. I think PixelHugger and Chris created the artwork for the MAME tokens. I know for sure they came up with the artwork that was used on the original 2004 BYOAC tokens.

It can get pretty costly to come up with your own personalized tokens that you intend to use just for your gameroom.

I think there are a few threads in which Santoro explains the token ordering process. Not sure off hand which thread it is.

here, I found this old thread that should help you figure out if it's worth it to you to have your own custom tokens.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=12543.0

keep in mind these prices are 2003 and as we have learned prices do go up every year because of the increase cost of raw materials.

Edit: I reread your original post, and I need to add that I'm pretty sure the artist were compensated for their artwork on the MAME tokens, so you would need to get Santoro's permission to use it.

You're looking at over $700 for 5000 (minimum order) brass for a new custom side w/ an existing second side design. Or over $900 for 5000 brass with both sides new/custom. I designed the cab side of the Mame token for Santoro... he's the one to get permission from to remint or modify it.

I've wanted to mint custom tokens for my cab for a looong time now, but I just can't justify the $700 :'(

DeLuSioNal29, Two things...

Pixel is correct - no mint will do 100 custom tokens for any reasonable price.  The minimum for the mint I use is 5000, 10000 for nickel.

Also the MAME token design you reference is my property, I paid for the designs that Pixelhugger and Chris did.  If you are still interested despite the minimums, let me know and we can work out a price on 5000.  You will still need custom dies which are about 200 per side.

Edit - Your original post is confusing.  You said BYOAC tokens, but put in a picture of the MAME tokens.  If you meant BYOAC tokens, you are free to work with the artists to get permission to use.  Those were a community project to which I claim no design rights.

Thanks
Dave

Thanks for the info everyone.  I heard this would be an expensive project but I didn't think it would be THAT expensive!  No biggie, looks like when I eventually order tokens I will get the one pictured above (MAME).

Thanks!
