Hoopstars Star Wars Cockpit Cab - USA Help required..!!
« on: December 17, 2007, 08:30:09 am »
Hi guys..

As some of you may know, a while ago I embarked on my next project - a replica Atari Star Wars Cockpit Cabinet..

Things have unfortunately slowed on the cab due to other commitments but, with 4 weeks annual leave about to start, I am planning on getting back into the project with a view to hopefully finish it off. :applaud:

One component require to finish this off is the ribbed T-Molding for the top of the canopy hoops.  I have located a pretty close substitute HERE, but after placing the order, they have advised that the shipping will be $98US..!!   :dizzy:   (don't even ask what that is in Aussie Dollars..!!)

What I am looking for is some kind hearted person in the US that I can ship this order to (directly from this company) and then they forward it to my address in Australia.  Obviously I would pay for all shipping costs and for your time etc..

I'd be willing but am concerned that it may cost a lot more to ship from MA than it would be from somewhere farther west.  Take a peek at that first.

USPS's rates are independent of location in US, or AU. It will be almost $40 to ship to you. I don't know what that company charges to ship domestically. Assume on the high side that they will charge $20. That still saves you.

How much T-molding are you buying?

Are you sure about that?  Last time I asked they were charging more to ship to CA than they were to MD.  They have a Zone rate system now.

For international mail it is location independent.

Hey Hoops, remember that I was interested in getting some as well ? Are you forced to order more than you need in length ? We could maybe split the order and have some good friend in the US forward it to us both ? That could lower cost / weight.

[Edit] Thinking about it again, you only need relatively little of that T-molding, I guess about 2 meters at the most for each side, so a total of 4 meters (about 13 feet). Why on earth would they charge $98,- for that ? ?

I can handle that on the US side.

Is the cockpit T Molding the same as the upright?  I need some for my upright.

Not the wide stuff. This is used on the parts of the cab (the top) where there are two boards next to eachother:

Gotcha.  If HoopstarsGarage wants to get an order shipped over to me, shoot me a PM, and I'll reply with my mailing address.  I can split it up and ship it both ways.

Thanks guys for the response and offers..!!  I have been away on business for the past couple of days and hadn't checked this thread until today. ::)  Anyway, I sent them an email telling them that "$95 for shipping is ridiculous".. they cam back with the following:

"The least expensive is by the postal service via Priority International appx. $50 and the lead time is 6 - 10 business days.  Or we can ship via Global International for $60 and is 5 business days."

What a turn around - a saving of $45 with just one email..!!

Chad, I REALLY appreciate the offer of help - never ceases to amaze me how willing to help people in this community are.!! :applaud:

Level42 - where are you located?  I could probably order twice the amount and then send directly to you.  Let me know ASAP so I can advise them of the increase in quantity.

I still don't get that shipping costs.  I mean, how much can this weigh ? And it's not big either, you curl it up and it would fit in a big envelope !

I just checked with T-molding.com. When I would order 14 feet (that's about what we need, but I'm not 100% sure, can someone measure please, my cab is in storage.....) regular black 1.5" T-molding from them, the shipping to me in Europe is $13,- through USPS first class international shipping.

So that $45 is still insane, unless they include their $25,- minimum order in that ?

Anyway, so I'm in Europe. I could just give it a try to ask a quote having it shipped to me, but it's my guess that someone in the US is our best bet.

There is a weight cut-off for the cheap 1st class shipping. Thru testing, it appeared to be right at 4 lbs. After that, shipping goes WAY up.

I'm pretty sure. That stuff is not that heavy in short lengths.
I just tried 100 feet of 3/4" and then shipping is about 30 bucks.....

Hoops, are you sure that they got the right amount you want to order ? Maybe they are thinking of a lot more ?

I can only assume they've got it right and aren't ripping me off but I'll soon tell when the package arrives and I see the "actual" postage.. either way, I am kinda stuck because I don't know of another supplier for this stuff and to complete the cabinet, I am going to "need" it.

The thing that pisses me off is that I had a complete coin door and coin box sent from the US to Australia using USPS and the postage from memory was around $40-ish US dollars.  The total package was HUGE and extremely heavy and although it took around 8 weeks to land here, I was VERY happy - it sucks when people try and sting you with postage to make up for their loss in actual item costings.. :(

Heh, I recently got a pacman cocktail coin box off of ebay. The guy charged $8.95 shipping USPS. I figured he was padding his sale and I was totally cool with that considering the auction ended for $2 and some change. When I got the package, it was sent flat rate box at a cost of $9.20 . I appreciated the guys honesty, but he could have shipped it for $4.70 if he would have used a regular priority box. ;D
