Anyone have a ultracade with a trackball?
« on: December 13, 2007, 01:50:17 am »
Just picked up a ultracade 2nd hand for on site use and it didnt have the trackball installed in it just joysticks and buttons.  I have the trackball classics upgrade game pack in the mail on the way, but it is no longer available in a retail box with any manual. That leaves me with limited knowledge of how to connect a trackball to the computer. No mention of it is made in the user manual. Global vr's distributors extent of help is "we can sell you a trackball".  Anyone have one installed and could take a snapshot or describe the hookup ? I'm trying to see if a usb will work or if i should pick up the wired version so i can make a order for some parts.

thx

p.s. whats a easy way for me to fiquire out if i have the ultimates or the supers in the cab?

You won't find a lot of people here with Ultracade products or support for their business.

However, you will find people who will help you with questions.  I'd wait until you get the kit, then post a message with as many details as you can.  I'm sure you will get help.

UltraCade supports any standard arcade style trackball.  It shipped with the Happ Controls 2 1/4" trackball in the 19" cabinets and the Happ Controls 3" trackball in the 27" cabinets.  You can buy a Happ Controls trackball and attach it too the USBlinx I/O board.  You can also install a spinner on the same cabinet if you like.  The SlikStik spinner works well.

Here are the pinouts for connecting a trackball and spinner.

J8
Pin 1 - Ground
Pin 2 - VCC
Pin 3 - not used
Pin 4 - not used
Pin 5 - Trackball XA
Pin 6 - Trackball XB
Pin 7 - Trackball YA
Pin 8 - Trackball YB
Pin 9 - not used
Pin 10 - Spinner ZA
Pin 11 - Spinner ZB
Pin 12 - not used

Well, thank you mr foley, first post in 2 yrs....didnt know you were still around.

After an exhaustive amount of digging I did find in the ultracade conversion kit installation pdf the diagram of the usblink board where it labels the trackball connector. Its just real awkward place when you have the panel pulled up. I contacted betson and they have a trackball wire harness on the way, I am assuming i can plug this right into a standard wired happs trackball.  I was planning on a 3" transparent blue so i can light it up using a led and blend in overall with the control panel theme. Luckily i have the 27" cabinet. My control panel measurements are 8 1/2 by 22 1/2. I fiquire if i rearrange the buttons from
this:
         o o o                      o o o
         o o o                      o o o

to this

          o o                         o o
          o o                         o o
          o o                         o o

and move the exit button above joystick 1, that will give me the room I need for the trackball. ( that way golden tee will be a little more enjoyable to play )  22 1/2 " wide isnt that much room  to work with when you need 2 joysticks, a trackball and 12 buttons all in a row....

The slickstick spinner doesnt have high resolution like the ones from ultimarc and groovey game gear. Or have you already compensated for this in the joshua os.?

Maybe sometime in the future,  after it earns me some quarters back,   I may install a spinner, the trackball is enuf fun for me right now though.  :dizzy:

I would highly suggest not arranging your buttons like that, it will make Street FIghter players very upset.  Instead, I would recommend a 2 1/4" trackball.
