USB connect for home-built controls?
« on: December 08, 2007, 09:36:30 pm »
Hey gang,

It's been a couple years since I built my cabinet; everything is running fine and I haven't felt the need to update anything so I've kind of lost touch. So forgive if this question reflects that:

Is there a way I can make a home-built CP that connects to PC via USB? With two sticks and multiple buttons per player (at least six)?

There is a number of options available from groovygamegear and ultimarc.  The Ipac2 will likely do everything you need, but look around on both those sites to see whats available

Yup.  Connect everything to an iPac and connect via USB.   Or use Ultrastick 360s, connect buttons to it, and plug in the USB cables.  Actually, almost everything is connected via USB nowadays, so you're pretty much covered.

Now I defy you to make a panel that utilizes no USB connection - therein lies the challenge.  ;)

Actually, that would be remarkably simple.  Use a keywiz (ps/2 connection). For trackball and/or spinner use a ps/2 or serial mouse hack.

My CP will have the PS/2 version of the IPAC. ;D

Currently it's hooked up to my Jamma board without a USB connection  ;D x2!!

(Sorry DaveMMR.  Feeling sick and the 5 scoops of sugar in my tea isn't helping!)

The next step is to make a completely stand-alone controller that can be plugged into any USB port, and will auto-launch straight to the front end when connected.

My "challenge" to make a non-USB panel was tongue-in-cheek.  It's actually quite easy if you really wanted to.  So, sorry, no prizes for anyone!   :P

Yeah, my current CP uses no USB (but as I said it's a couple years old).

NullDC doesn't run full speed on my cab PC though, so I'm thinking someday another CP is in order.
