Frustrated with my arcade build.
« on: December 03, 2007, 12:54:37 am »
It's seemed like every step of the way people and things are intentionally getting in my way to hamper progress.

Take for example my coin door.  I wired all the electrical for it last week, and I go to do the install today and I can't find the screws and bracket hardware that attaches the coin door to the wood front.

I took it off when we were measuring the hole size, and I went out of my way to put it in a bag so it didn't get lost.  Now I go to find that bag and it's missing.

Spent about 2 hours tossing my place to find it, and absolutely no luck.

What's a good alternative, just some straight pieces and really thin bolts?

Gorilla Glue!  Dunno how stable that'd be though...

You could definitely replace the missing parts with some appropriately sized machine screws (bolts) and strips of metal or even wood.  The best part is that as soon as you finish, the original parts will show up.  I don't know for sure what size those are (I could check mine tomorrow if nobody else knows) but I bet their either #10 or 1/4" bolts, probably #10s.  If you go into a hardware store and get a small package of both sizes in 1/2" or 3/4" length it would only cost a few bucks, you could maybe even buy some fender washers and bend them to use as your metal strips.  If you put just a slight bend in the washer it will allow you to tighten it down onto the wood cabinet face.

Hardware stores sell metal strips (in varying lengths) with holes in them, just cut it to size and bend it how you want it.

Or .... you can get angled metal brackets and bend them as well (see picture for bracket example).  They make varying sizes of these ...... I would suggest getting the 1" brackets instead of big ones like in the picture.

I bought a similar coin door off of ebay and it was missing some clips.  I bought some storm door clips at the local hardware store similar to the attached photo (closest I could find online).  I don't remember what size the screws were.  Hang in there I have the same problem too my kids tend to help me reorganize my stuff.  I searched for hours for my de solder bulb and finally broke down and bought a new one to find it two days later behind the tv.

Well the big thing that's been killing me is artwork.  I had one person lined up to do it, he backed out.  Then I found another person to do it, she's leaving town for 3 months to travel.

So I sent off some emails to Mamemarquees and Pixelhugger but I'd imagine given it's Christmas it'll be months before I have a CPO.

So I'm thinking I'm just going to assemble it without the artwork and deal with the CPO later.

This your first cabinet? Sounds like you got some 1st cabinet jitters. When I was building my first cabinet and had a rush rush feeling, I would take some time (20-30minutes) and play some arcade games on my computer. That usually calmed me down enough to do it right.

Naw I just hate it when people or things stop me from being productive, especially when I've set aside a block of time to focus on something.

Divemaster has come through with flying colors, now I just need to get through this artwork thing.

Uggh, tell me about it.  I'm my own worst enemy when it comes to misplacing things, but when I tried to get a lot of work done, there was always someone who had to mess up my plans with some bull (usually girlfriends).  But then they'd be days I'd do absolutely nothing, and no one would bother me at all.   Figures.

...But I did get it done. :-)  Hang in there.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

I think the artwork is going to be a monumental hurdle for me.

yeah, artwork is the sticking point for my second project (first was a cocktail so it doesnt have any). sometimes i get stuck with a problem and end up leaving it for ages. but when i get started again i try and make a point of doing a little something each time, and leaving the sticking points until later. it gives you more time to think about the problem, and the other things need to be done anyway. last week i did a bit of fiddling with the coin door for instance. nothing major acheived but it needed to be done at some point...
