I don't think people here want to buy a CP when they can just make it on their own, that is the whole idea of being here and the fun of it.

I'm not trying to down your thread here but it is like selling ice to people in alaska.

SlikStik? ArcadeInaBox? GoPodular?....X-Arcade?

When people who don't posess the best skills have the opportunity to buy a quality part that might otherwise be made improperly, some feel just fine in letting the pros handle it.

I think it's great that they offer the service. Some of us may not be the best woodworkers, and may want a shortcut..

Looks great!

I'm really not. This is byoac, and if you didn't know that means BUILD YOUR OWN ARCADE CONTROLS, not buy your own arcade controls. If people want to buy things there are plenty of other sites to be a part of where you can buy merchandise, this is a place to do it yourself.

Except for a good chunk of the B/S/T section...and all the threads about the various CP vendors...and the threads about who wants to build memberx a custom CP...and the various members who make some extra income building CPs for other people.

But yes, other than that stuff it's OOPS I forgot...Jukeboxs...everything elses...consoles...and politics and religions.  Yes other than that it's COMPLETELY about Building Your Own Arcade Controls.

These panels look like a great candidate to fill a void left by a recently vanished and previously popular vendor.  I hope they allow many less ambitious people to get their feet wet in this hobby.

They should add clickable pics so you can see them up close and on the backside as well.

Yes you are... did you insist that people should still be BUILDING THEIR OWN KEYBOARD HACKS instead of buying encoders when those first come out?

If you didn't notice all the people left out to dry from Slikstiks recent departure, it should be obvious to even you that there are quite a few people who buy arcade control panels. If you spent some time in the project announcement you would see plenty of announcements of people buying a Ultimate Arcade II and attaching a pre-built CP on it.

Good job Mameroom - you'll fill a void.

Next thing you're going to be channeling Xtian and calling this Assemble You Own Arcade Controls ...

You obviously haven't read the various SlikStik threads and seen that there are lots of folks who want this service.

I would guess somewhere near half or more of the people who visit this site end up buying something instead of building.

Both buyers and build-your-own types should feel at home here. Buying pre-made products has been part of the site from the beginning (V-Stick anyone?)

Well I don't know about you guys, but I actually molded my own buttons, machined my joysticks, and I chiseled my trackball out of soapstone.

Clearly Tommy's got a point here.

I did one better, I grew my own trees for the wood.  THat's why it took me years to get off my butt and build my first one.

-- ;-)

I'd say out of building your entire machine, the control panel tends to be the most complex part.  There's a lot of woodworking, cutting/stripping wires, crimping, wiring, etc.  That scares a LOT of people, and takes an immense amount of time.  Someone can still design and build their entire cabinet and drop in a pre-built control panel and still get a great deal of pride out of what they constructed.

I can't tell you how many times I've considered just buying the UAII kit this time around since my UAII was destroyed in a move (cabinet blew apart after a mishap in the moving truck, I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT! :banghead:.  I'd still be damn happy with it.

I personally would rather build, but I think the most important thing this site does is expand the hobby, so if people want to buy, GO FOR IT.  Keep the hobby going.  Interest is the only thing that's going to drive new products, new frontends, and new innovations.

Just for a reminder, when someone discovers MAME for the first time they usually do a Google search.  Guess what?  This site pops right up.  A majority of the people (me included) buy a pre-made solution to get started.  Once they get the bug, then they build something.

This thread is to let all the people who got screwed by SlikStik know they can still get a panel built (the same freaking panels).  I bet a poll of everyone who frequents this site today will show that the majority have not actually finished building a working project yet.

Oh, and NY Giants suck.  ;)

Although I think it's great that new panels are being offered, do you have any information concerning the control panels that were ordered prior to this new arrangement?

Come on guys, lets not get silly and think i meant to build things that are not buildable like buttons, encoders or trackballs. I meant not buy the whole setup to where you have to do no work on your own with the actual wood portion of the CP.

I guess i just never thought to buy something that i could do myself and having to build something on your own was what it's all about.

People build things man, that's the whole idea here to do it yourself for the most part, no?  Get yourself a piece of mdf or any kind of wood and cut it out and drill holes for a setup you planned out and how you like it. I guess i can see people with no skills wanting to buy it all done up but that's not the spirit of this site to me. Taking pride and building and setting it up with your own hands and labor is all the fun and what makes it all better than something you just buy.

Surly this is not a foreign concept to grasp and that's all i meant.

It's not a foreign concept, but getting the wood part done by people who know what they're doing still leaves the putting together of wiring/buttons/the initial layout, etc to the user so it certainly still requires people to "do it themselves".

It's cool to have your opinion, no problem with that, but your statement seemed out of line as somewhat judgemental and as you can see from the response, not representative of many who are members here.

Personally, I'm considering this as an option.  Do-it-myself?  Man, I just do NOT have the talent... I do find these services to be somewhat expensive considering it's just wood and holes (for a couple of hundred bucks if I understood correctly?  Ouch!) but for good work, no price is too big, and of course, I know there's more to it than wood/holes :).

Everyone has their own particular skill sets.  For me, I find the woodworking part daunting (and nearly impossible since I not only lack space for a work room, but have no tools and very little woodworking skill).  On the other hand, I think it will be fun to install the buttons, joysticks, trackball, etc. and then wiring the whole thing up.  I'm just going to buy a control panel blank to give the project a jump start (of course this may or may not happen depending on if I receive my refund from SlikStik).

Since the SlikStik fiasco, I have no intention of ordering a pre-built controller, but that was my first choice.

Hey, I would absolutely LOVE to build my own cabinet and my own control panel but I simply am not able to.  I have no garage, and MDF is an absolute mess to work with.  Electronics and wiring doesn't phase me at all.  I've built many computers and done many wiring jobs which have all turned out fantastic.  It's the wood-working that I CAN'T do because I have no space, no urge to cover the entire inside of my house so that the dust doesn't cake onto everything, and no tools with which to do the damned thing.

That is why I'm having someone build my arcade cabinet shell and once that's built I'll be looking to put together a control panel for it.  Again, it would be MUCH cheaper and MUCH more fun to do it myself, but I simply don't have the ability to do it.
