Tekken 3 on Mame 0.120
« on: November 21, 2007, 04:38:51 am »
Hi,

I am new to this forum, so I apologies if the answer to this question is obvious. I have just converted a Jamma cabinet to run Mame  :)

Specs:- Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66Ghz; Asus P5E-VM Intel G35 motherboard; 2Gb DDR2 PC8500 Memory; Ultimarc Arcade VGA; Ultimarc J-pac. I am running standard  Mame 0.120 32bit and Mamewah 1.62b12a

Really pleased with the set-up so far, but Tekken 3 is really slow even though it say it's running rock solid 100%. I have tried all the setting I can, but it's still very slow when playing. I guess my spec should be able to run this at full speed, so is the speed issue a problem with the emulation? I know it say it is not 100% accurate.

I have it running at correct speed wit Zinc, but the sound is very bad.

Andy Idea's

Thanks
Andy

Sorry to say it's has to be something in your setup, I just did a quick benchmark of tekken3 on my system E6850 @ 4ghz, MAMEUI 32bit 0.121 in XP Pro and got a a score of 230%, even with scaling that score to your CPU clock speed your system should still be able to run it at about 150%.
So it has to be something about your setup that is slowing it up, I can only suggest updating to 0.121 deleting any old config files and try running it in DirectDraw, with the -MT switch and see where that gets you, also make sure you've got the lastest drivers for your PC including the Intel chipset INF.

Hi taz-nz,

Thanks for your reply. I should have said that I am using DirectDraw and the -mt switch and all the latest drivers.  The problem is that the game is running at 100%, but actually plays very slow. If I set the throttle to 1.5 in my tekken3.ini the actual gameplay is nearer to what it should be, but of course that make everything else (i.e. sound character select run much to fast). I know you got a benchmark of 230%, but have you actually tried to play it? Would be interested to know what you think? Tekken 2 plays fine so I don't think it's my set up.

That's just an issue with Tekken 3.

Do you mean the emulation has currently got the speed / timing wrong?

Thanks

When you run the game in mame it says:

The Video emulation is not 100%

The Sound emulation is not 100%

Pressing F11 brings up the FPS and it say's it is running 100%, but the gameplay is much slower than it should be.

 Andypc,

The above means that the game emulation is NOT  100%  PERFECT.

The emulation speed being 100% has nothing to do with it.

When it said the emulation isn't 100% I was expecting graphical glitches, crash bugs etc. I wasn't expecting the speed/timing to be so far off. As I said I can get the speed up using the throttle setting, but that makes the sound run far to fast. Zinc runs the game really well, but the sound is very poor. Any sugestions?

You can always buy the real PCB...or wait for MAME to catch up.

From reading this thread I'd say there are none - you can run it at full speed but due to imperfect emulation you'll see strange behaviour (as described in the original post).

My suggestion,

Run pSX http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com/ and use the PSOne version of Tekken3.  It is a perfect port of the arcade version (difference is the arcade had 3D backgrounds while the PSOne had 2D backgrounds.)

It runs full speed on my Athlon 3200+

Does anyone know if there is a way to cure the sound problems in Zinc with Tekken 3. I would rather get the original running than a port.

Thanks
Andy

You can try this:

http://www.emuasylum.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-36307.html

I've not tried it, yet, but one of the posters indicated that it improved Tekken 3's performance.

Namco system 11 equals playstation hardware minus some 3D acceleration (hence the 2D backgrounds.)  give it a try, virtually the same program.

Okay, I tried it tonight, but it made no difference with Tekken 3 (made a world of difference with some others, though!)

no, it's just playstation hardware, using roms instead of a CD.  Any changes made to the game are simply design choices.

and no, the emulation isn't correct there are issues with the root counters (timers) on all PSX based hardware in MAME.  100% on PSX hardware speed is too fast on some games, too slow on others plus they tend to suffer from random crashes.  Don't use MAME for PSX based games.

Sorry Haze, I didn't mean to spread misinformation.

However, for Andypc, my suggestion is now even more valid now that a MAMEDev has said that the Namco system 11 == Playstation hardware and that MAME PSX emulation is poor at the moment.

Try the pSX emulator, it does a fantastic job of very accurately emulating the playstation and Tekken 3 is the same game except for the 2D backgrounds and some additional hidden characters (which I don't like so I don't play them.)

I am only recently into fighters at all, first time I played any fighter was a few months ago when I responded to a "Best fighter" thread here on BYOAC.  I still can't stand most fighters but Tekken 3 has really grown on me.  The only reason I have the pSX emulator on my computer is for Tekken 3.  I have since discovered Oddworld - Abe's Exodus which is a great platform game.

long rambling post is now over.
