ASUS K7V-T mb help?
« on: May 09, 2003, 12:17:00 am »
I just got the motherboard in today, and poped in a 900mhz Athlon, 256megs of ram, DVD drive, and 80 gig hd.
I was trying to install WinXP and during the pre-install I was told the installer couldnt identify my computer type.?
It gave me the option of I486 and other. Other just asks for a floppy. I checked the ASUS site and no luck finding anything there. So I picked I486. Everything went fine till it was time to reboot. I get to the point where: Listing PCI Device's... Then 10 seconds or so later it resets. I have tryed everything from changing the boot up device, to trying different cd-rom's. At one point it told me that the master device failed (my hd). The HD works fine on my other computer. I thought about formatting it, but if it wont even boot from a cd, I dont think its the HD.

I am out of ideas. Anyone want to give this a go?

check asus's site for a new bios for your board. flash with new version if available. If that doesn't help, try lowering your ram timings in the bios. You may also have to experiment with changing other settings to the "safer" side...

Also make sure your heatsink is properly installed and you removed the piece of plastic that covers the thermal transfer compound

I have the latest bios.. Maybe I need to reflash it. Not sure how to lower the ram timeings but I'm sure I'll figure it out. The mb is used, so I know the plastic has been removed. It came with a 650 K7 which wouldnt boot, so I put in the 900. It says it supports up to 1ghz Athlon.. I'm beginning to wonder what the hell is going on.

Just making sure it's not overclocked.

Also try setting stuff in the BIOS to the default settings.

Try another OS, see if that works?

It's not overclocked, and I have tryed setting the default values, and still get the same problem. I am going to try WindowsME as soon I as I can get it to boot from the cd drive. I'm gonna mess around with it some more when I get home, and see. Otherwise I'll just through in my laptop.. Worried about heat issues with that though.

Maybe you have a flaky pci card. Remove all non-essentials and try again. If it works, shutdown and add 1 card back in. Try again. If it's OK, repeat (1 card at a time) until either all cards are installed or the computer flakes out. If it flakes out, the last card installed is the culprit.

Also be aware that some cards don't like sharing IRQ's. Several of the slots on your mobo *permanently* share IRQ's and there's not a darn thing you can do about it except to find the slots that don't share and use them. Generally, the slot closest to the AGP shares with the AGP. There is another slot that shares with the USB, and possibly one sharing with onboard sound (if applicable).
