cigarette smoke of ages - de-odouring arcade hardware
« on: November 15, 2007, 08:25:33 am »
Hello everyone.

To get straight to the point - I recently bought a Sega Naomi 2 motherboard and it horribly smells like cigarette smoke (arcades must be so unhealthy!). I already cleaned the insides of the housing from some disgusting, pure black dust - especially the areas surrounding the main fan and the two secondary fans where heavily covered. Now, does anyone have an idea how to minimize the stench of this thing? It smells like an ashtray! Do things like this febreeze spray work? Any chance to clean the pcb at all or can only the plastic housing be cleaned?

I would probably mix a dilute (mild)  bleach solution and wipe down the insides...  after that, maybe put some open boxes of baking soda inside to help absorb the odors.

You just gave me an idea! I remeber deodourizing my fridge with lemon halfs... I will test it inside - if it doesn't distort the plastic's colour, I can use it outside aswell : )

with all my cabs (all wood) I strip them down, clean with bleach water then seal it with KILZ primer

Do it arabian style and pour a bottle of cheap cologne on it every week.

Thanks for your suggestions. I got some good results using fresh squeezed lemon juice on the plastic housing, afterwards I cleaned it with a damp rag with some dishwashing liquid in the water. This also helped when I mis-used my microwave and created a nice amount of smoke in there ; )

Ain't that a bit of impolite racial stereotyping? ; )

isoprynol rubbing alcohol works good on the boards but make sure the board is not powered by any means and b carefull not to snag any of the componets with the rag.

also give it a half hour to an hour to dry compoletely before apllying any power back to it.

the rubbing alcohol will not eat any trace's or anything like that.

Everybody,

Use a product called "benefect".  I used it to get rid of a musty cellar and it worked 100%.  It also is completely harmless if you can get past the intense smell of thyme/mint while it dries.
