Just saw the Extreme Arcade at Sears...

Just saw this at Sears, doesn't seem to be such a bad deal - $1,500, with a 19" monitor and what felt like Happs buttons and Competition joysticks. The cab was pretty solid, and a decent height. Plus, it has some good games. Not a bad alternative for a non-BYOAC member. Here's some pics from my phone:

Why do they push Centipede on that cab?  No trackball?  Centipede sucks on a stick.  Also,  the sign says LUNAR LANDINGS...wtf is a Lunar Landing?

I don't really like these things due to poor emulation, but if they could get the price down into the $600-$700 range they'd sell them by the thousands. At that price, they probably don't sell many at all.

If I HAD to spend $1500 on a machine I'd probably get one of those 60 in 1 multicade machines... sure they're unlicensed chinese bootlegs but the ones I've played seem to emulate games pretty accurately and at least they support trackballs and cocktail modes.. plus, vertical orientation... which, makes you wonder about this cab...  Hopefully its not a Jakks and a TV in there!

Previous multicade machines like this that have turned up in US retail outlets were either Ultracade-based, or built on a proprietary PCB designed by Clay Cowgill.  Not Jakks, not MAME, and not chinese bootlegs.

That control panel is too narrow, and those sticks are too close together, for comfortably playing two player games—unless both players are about 12 years old or less. It looks like it would work good for Robotron though, or even single-player Karate Champ.

And why do they have a "Non-Functional Display" out there? Who would buy something like that without seeing what the picture & sound quality, accuracy of play, control responsiveness, etc., are like?

Centipede is at least playable, if it's the joystick version.

At $1500 it's just going to end up on clearance soon anyway, just like all the others did in major chains.  Sears is especially quick to clear out big crap like this.  Keep an eye on it for $700 in a few months.

How do you play Battlezone?

If it's like the unit they had in cosco (the one with the trackball) you play battlezone with both sticks and button 1.  It seemed to work ok. 

But for $500 more the costco "arcade ledgends" has the trackball and fighting games. (not that I'd buy either) from a cost to value standpoint.

My local big lots has a um.. Golden Tee at $299 I think. I wasn't paying much attention to the price..the screen was nowhere near the size of Chicago's.. maybe a 15 at most. kinda defeats the point of a 'arcade experience'. . apparently they've ended up with Target's infamous half-size games now at half-price at $249. next year: Salvation Army store for $125.

at least they're using real arcade parts for the controls. Now that I think of it why don't ALL those companies like that midway one at target use real arcade parts?
if WE can get them for a buck.35 a button surely that can't break them to upgrade??
