cant solder my sanwa joystick!
« on: November 06, 2007, 03:15:43 pm »
hi, iam making an arcade stick for my 360 and cant get the SANWA JLF-TP-8YT  joystick to work! i have soldered it but the xbox cant regester it or at the the dashboard it will just regester right or left and stick like that until i turn it off!

is there a special way to solder SANWA JLF-TP-8YT joysticks? (the xbox control pad has no common ground BTW!)

thanks

Can you post a couple of pics of what you've done showing the solder joints on the JLF?

If you use the micro-controller that madcatz makes for the xbox360 and sells at EB games, it has common grounds and you can use it with your Sanwa JLF and the 5-pin wiring harness.

If you are using any other xbox360 controller, you need to take off the JLF pcb with the microswitches and replace it with regular microswitches.  Sanwa makes switches for this purpose but cherry's will work just fine.

Then you can wire 2 independent wires per direction on your joystick.

Like I said, you will probably NOT want to use the JLF pcb but rather replace it with 4 regular microswitches.  They will fit right in and be held in place by the square restrictor gate.

Also, that is not the right madcatz.  You want the microcon xbox360 by madcatz.  It has the striped rubber grips on the handles.

Good luck.

I wouldnt throw away the Sanwa circuit board.  You could probably sell it on ebay or save it for late use in an arcade machine.   OR you could just desolder the microswitches from the board and use them with the 360 controller.  or like he said earlier get the madcatz microcon that has a common ground.

Here is what I do when I build with a Sanwa on my 360 controllers.

I cut the post that is the ground.  You can tell when you look at the solder side of the PCB, it's the area around the outside each switch has one post going to.  Unsolder the post, then cut it, pulling out the remainder from the pcb.  Then put a dab of glue on the switch to the circuit board as it will become a bit loose with that connection gone.

Then solder, you are good to go.
