Mame cab built on systm 1, 2, 3 and 4 of 5 (webisode)
« on: November 05, 2007, 08:28:19 pm »
Former techtv people started a sight called revision 3. There is show called systm and they are building a Mame cab over 4 episodes. They use Saint's book.

Not bad, even thought they are a bit wordy.  I did always find Patrick to be entertaining when he was on Screen Savers.  (they really should have mentioned the board!)

Their cab design is kinda cool so far it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Yeah, this is a nice promotion for the book!  I like the video and the commentary - made it more entertaining than just watching a time lapse of a cab assembly.  I'd like to see this kind of thing in the future on BYOAC where builders videotape their build and provide an edited documentary.  It's a little late for my first project, but maybe for a 2nd project I'll do this instead of a blog.

Congrats on the book promotion, Saint... hope it brings some more sales and forum registrations.

Those guys are real ham n' eggers.

Are they even gluing that thing together or just screwing it together? I haven't seen any mention or use of glue at all.

Plus they started putting the T-molding on before it was painted (stopping it short halfway up the side), as well using the slot cutter for it after the cabinet was assembled. And how about the impromptu heat vent slots with wobbly cuts?

Their whole exchange with Saint on their forum, regarding the links in his signature, was annoying too. I'm not sure they realized they were talking to the author of the book that inspired/instructed their project in the first place.

Ya I know. They said the didn't realize how much  time it would take. So I think they were summing up what they did. The first one was better. I fond it strange that they didn't use glue especially  since he was a set designer. I also think they didn't know he was the author and webmaster.

Woo hoo!  They showed my cabinet along with my (probably something I picked up here when doing research to build my cabinet) tip to measure the doorways at the 10:20 mark.

Apparently THEY have some big doorways because that thing is ridiculous :)  It funny... when Patrick mentioned measure the door David started talking about the height of the ceiling...  Maybe HE forgot to measure the door too  :laugh2:

Episode 3 was rushed... not much detail in there, especially considering that they were building the CP which is where a lot of people tend to get nervous (myself included).  I do hope this vid series creates some more book sales for Saint as well as some new members to the forum.

I still think that if someone did a full video documentation, start to finish) of a complete arcade build and sold it in DVD format, they could make a nice buck (hint hint to certain experts on the forum).  Include cab plans and templates on the DVD along with the vids and you've got a real product :)

Seriously, I just don't get the logic in Saint jumping over a Jedi with lightsaber raised.  He was just asking to lose his legs.

6 hours to wire a two player panel?  maybe I'm sloppy but I could do that MUCH faster.  Mame "case" eek.. that's like nails on a chalk board for me..  I like how he said that the Ipac can only have 4 simultaneous button presses without ghosting,,,  what the hell? oh and his coin door has its own CPU... ???  This dude is seriously talking out of his ass ::)

I caught that about the IPAC and immediately corrected them...  No need for Andy from Ultimarc to get bad press because of something these guys said incorrectly.

As a new builder I was hoping for some good info from this series.. sadly it was more misinformation than useful info.

All I can say is that I'm glad I DID buy Saint's book, and that If those guys actually followed it, they would have ended up with a WAY better cabinet... er I mean 'case'   ???.   The only guy that seemed to know what he was talking about was the software guy, they should have involved him more.

Episode 5 (the last one in the bunch) is up.

The marquee, sideart, and bezel are done, BTW.  No comment...

after watching their video I realize I'm making a few mistakes in my cabinet...

1)  I didnt space the buttons far enough appart to me comfortable played by Shaquille O'Neal

2)  I didnt build my "case" large enough to accomodate a 57" monitor...

where were these guys when I started planning my cab? :D

Did anyone else notice that the monitor wasn't even centered in the cabinet?  Looked to be left of center to me.

If that guy really was a set designer, I see why he's working for systm now.

Not impressed.

I noticed the same things.. I was HOPING it was just the camera angle.  It probably was off center. I guess he just "eyeballed it" :D

Either those guys are INCREDIBLY short, or that machine is over 8 feet tall. Damn, might as well put a basket ball hoop up on the marquee.

I think I know why they keep calling it a case.  Its because you can fit an arcade machine inside of it :D

I think I'm just disapointed because I expected more.

I expected profesional results with some good thought behind it.

I also expected less banter and more information.  I think if they would have lurked on this board for a few weeks (even a few days) the cab they built would be much different.

I don't mind what they ended up with though...but considering their resources they could have done much...much better and presented it in a more professional manner.  Their results are similar to many first time cabs done by first time do-it-yourselfers.
(I'm treading lightly since I am too much of a perfectionist and too lazy to start any of my own builds yet.)

I almost wish they had brought one of our MVP's on the show.  That would have been awesome! They could have at least shown some of our uber cool examples...

If someone like Knievel, for example, just had someone video him during one of his builds and sell the raw DVD for $10 or so, I'd buy one.  It would be nice to see a top-to-bottom buildout video'd.

Got at least one registration out of it...ME!

I'm into 80's stuff, always have been always will be. I have an Atari 2600, an ATC350X (3 wheeled ATV), and my Freestyle Bike from 20 years ago. If I had more room (4 bedroom house and 3 kids), time (see drawback 1), and money (see drawback 2) to dedicate to this stuff I'd have a garage/house full.

Anyway, as a n00b to cabinets, I thought their episodes lacked some information as well. I guess that's the reason Google exists. They did have some good notes that provided some good starting points. After lurking here for a week or so, I do believe they could have done a better job with their resources. I agree Knievel's cabinets & touchscreen jukebox are nothing short of true craftsmanship.

My conversion of my Taito cabinet will be nowhere near the quality of his. I do love how the bar is set so high. Gives me something to strive for after I get this all figured out on the first build on a not so terrific condition cab.

Thanks for being here!!

Makes for interesting viewing in that they have bothered to film it, but I can't help but wonder who the program is aimed at - novices or pro's?

The way they patronisingly talk about the PC setup makes me think 'aimed at novices', yet the way they blast through the finishing and wiring without so much as a snippet of detailed footage makes me think it was intended for guys like us.

So which is it?

Hopefully not us pro's, as there are so many things that we know could have been done cleaner or easier, and don't even get me started on the design!

Its almost like the video was filmed 10 years ago or something.. They were talking about keyboard hacking and stuff.. WHO does that anymore? you can get a keywiz for what.. $20?  Plus, with sites like Jakobud's full of cabinet plans WHY for the love of God did they make that ugly ass bohemeth?  Maybe it was to accomodate the 12" border around the 33" TV...

The video wasn't aimmed at pros because those guys are clearly novices.  IMO BYOAC is THE place to get information about this hobby and they didnt even mention it did they?  If you dont know about BYOAC you dont know s :censored:... who knows.. maybe they're lurkers...   :dunno
