Where can I find a cool illuminated power switch for my cab?
« on: November 02, 2007, 12:27:27 pm »
Hello,

A few weeks ago, I got a cool power button for my cab to install directly on the CP.

This morning, I had a surprise when I found out the this switch isn't a momentary switch like a regular pushbutton (ON as long as it is pressed, OFF when released), but ON when you press it and remains ON until you press is again.

At first, I thought this was a momentary switch and that it was what I needed.  (Unless it is called otherwise  :dunno)
Similar Switch on EBay

So I need some help to replace that switch with something else...

My perfect switch would be
- metal/stainless
- illuminated power logo (yellow)
- smaller than a regular arcade push button.

Please post any link (even if it is not my perfect switch) that might help me...

Regards
Jay

or here

You can get them in momentary on both sites and many others if you google them.

You mean it's a pushbutton toggle switch as opposed to a momentary contact switch?  ;D

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. If I intend on using the switch to activate the computer, I'll have to replace it (unless I can find a nice fast AT motherboard/processor combo!). Those glowing buttons are nice, but usually on arcade cabs, the power switches are countersunk and hidden from view. I'm going for the cigarette burned, bad conversion, with the oversized security bar look to my cab.  :)

I don't understand... Isn't it being a pushbutton toggle a good thing?

The light stays on when the cab is on... goes off the when the cab is off... no?

Unless you want it only to light when pressed, I'm guessing?

Thanks, I was looking for the correct name

Hey Namco,
you just made me think of an alternate use of that switch...
I could add a black and discreet  momentary switch on the side of the CP (or an extra arcade button) that would be the power switch and use that one to turn on/off the 5V to the LCD topgun led bars and recoil power connectors.
(some people said that it might increase the life span of the led bar)

yeah, I love the look of these cabs  :laugh2:

Hello Organic Jerk,

My dilema is not about the light of the switch.
In fact, if I remember correctly there a ways to connect it so that it is always on or ON when the switch is ON.  (that's a lot of ON...)

The way I understand how the power switch is working on a computer is that is is OPEN when unused and SHORTED when pressed.
I want to add a "computer/arcade" switch on the CP.
That switch will be connected in parallel with the actual PC switch.
So whenever I press the real or the CP power switch, I'll be able to
turn the computer on and off, without having to open the back door or coin door to have access to the real switch.

Now, the problem I have is I think my switch is a toggle switch.
So if I want to use it as a "computer switch", I would have to press it once
(so that the switch would now be GROUNDED) and then press it again to put it in the OPEN state.

What I need is a momentary switch (like an arcade button) that I would press until the cpu shut down and then just release it...

I'll check again tonight how exactly the switch works.
I was a bit surprised to see the switch stayed in the ON position.
I tried it quickly when a got it, but I guess, I didn't press the button all the way  :dizzy:

A couple thoughts:

Happ makes a smaller illuminated button in yellow, but it's a black bezel:

http://www.happcontrols.com/pushbuttons/5400042x.htm

Same with Seimitsu, it makes the similar looking PS-14-06, the round yellow illuminated part is 24mm

But as far as a metal/yellow illuminated button, perhaps a chrome yellow Ultralux button? But that is the size of a regular Sanwa pushbutton with a 30mm mounting hole.

http://www.ultimarc.com/ultralux.html

The Happs, Ultralux can be ordered through divemaster I'm sure, and the Seimitsu is in their cataloge and could be ordered through akihabarashop.com (I believe their new website will be up soon)

Thanks to everyone who help me here!

I played a bit tonight with the switch to see how it behaves...

those switches have 5 pin
LED GND
LED 12v

the other 3 are for the switch (A,B,C)

when the switch is "released", A and C are shorted.
when the switch is "fully pressed" or "partially pressed", B and C are shorted

A partial press is the "momentary switch" behavior.  The race is long enough.  This is why they say that the switch can be used as a momentary switch.

A full press, keep the switch in the "press" state, until you press again to release it.

So I can still use the button for the PC power supply.
However, the more I think of it, the more I think I'll use that one to turn on/off the
5V connector required for the topgun recoil and led bar...

Look through this thread. On the second page there are a couple pics of the control panel and the power button.
