Everex and google have released a PC today that runs all open source Software for $199.

It uses a small form factor motherboard and a low power Via cpu installed in an oversized (for this combo) standard mid tower case.  I read that this it to stop the walmart crowd from judging it based on size.  :laugh2:

Regardless, I really want one to take apart, it would make a great bartop I think.  What do you think?

Everex TC2502 Green gPC w/ Via C7-D Processor

Here's a write up at "Wired"

1.5 GHz Via Technologies C7-D processor
512 MB of DDR2 system memory expandable to 2 GB
80 GB hard disk drive
DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive
10/100 Mbps Ethernet
gOS operating system
OpenOffice.org 2.2 software suite

Oh, and it can run windows...

Even at the low end, however, image is everything. The gPC is built using tiny components, but put inside a full-size case because research indicates that Wal-Mart shoppers are so unsophisticated they equate physical size with capability.

This reminds me of the cheap PCs Frys used to sell with Lindows.

I would be very interested to buy one of these PCs as it would be a excellent purchase for my Sub Mini Projects (6 in the fire and counting) as I'm real tired of using laptops.

I was a big fan of ITX PCs and the board sizes were great, even the low power variants that are great for servers.

Hopefully there will be some rebates to kick start these PCs, and get the masses to buy them.

I'll easily get one for the old dear to play on, my nephew and the old guy next door would love a £100 PC.

Heck a Mini ITX 5000 costs £60 for the board alone.  Home Basic too?

Where can I get one for Christmas?  :applaud:
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Same here. I bought one of the el-cheapo GQ PC's from Frys, souped it up with the guts of a dying PC, dumped that crappy Lindows and been happy with it ever since. Even with the upgrades to bring it up to speed, I still came in under $500 for the value of the parts I put in at the time. It was my preferred PC until the GPU fan died (got the fan replaced, now I need new heat sinks). :(

For $200, I eagerly await the first buyer to come back here and give us some snaps of the guts. Damn shame sending that ugly case to the landfill though.
