49-way Joystick Wiring for Gauntlet: Legends Jamma
« on: October 15, 2007, 08:56:00 pm »
Howdy, folks,

I'm rewiring a 4-p cabinet to run with a Gauntlet Legends Jamma board.  The problem I have is that I can't get the 49-way joysticks wired right.  I found the power and ground pins on the joysticks (assuming they take +5v, not -5v), but I can't seem to get the right ordering for the 8 data pins.  I have a few questions...

Do you have a cabinet with Happ 49-ways?  Which side of the joystick is the connector on?

I have the cabinet manual, but it only specifies which 4 pins go to up/down and which go to left/right.  Anyone have the full mapping from the board to the joysticks?  If not, does anyone have the pinout definition for the 49-ways?  The web is oddly silent on this topic.

I'm pretty psyched to get these things working... we've fully rewired the entire cabinet from the ground up, and this is the only remaining hitch.  Any help is appreciated.  Even if you don't know any of these answers, but have a Gauntlet: Legends or Dark Legacy cabinet, some pics inside the box would probably do the trick.

Thanks,
Chris

I've got a GL CP sitting next to my desk; what part(s) of the inside of the box would you like pics of?

i can also take pics of my Midway NFL Blitz '99 OEM wiring if you'd like.... If you think that'd help...etc...

I have 2 spare Blitz CP's with 7 joysticks between the 2 of them.... just kinda laying around :).  I think at least 5 of them are still hooked up as they originally were.

Thanks for the GPWiz link.  That has the axis pins listed, but not which is which.

I spent a couple more hours digging on this forum and the webs, and came up with these two links.  Between them, I think I'll be able to get it wired.  I think the main problem is I had the joystick rotated 90 degrees.  The connector is supposed to be on the left side, not the top.

bleargh: I probably don't need pictures now, but if you can confirm that your 49-ways have the 13-pin connector on the left side, that'd be helpful.

Gracias

Yup, they're all on the left side of the sticks.

If you want photos, PM me and let me know; I've still got the original wiring harness wired up in the CP and could take photos of both ends of it for you if that'd help.

That did the trick.  Now I just have to remake the control panel so the joysticks fit horizontally. :(  It's a 4-p Showtime cabinet, and apparently they didn't use 49-way, because the connector without a wire is hitting the left side of the cab.  Oh well... at least now my problems have known, if obnoxious solutions.
