WTB: Small Trackball
« on: October 13, 2007, 11:23:54 am »
I want one of these:

http://www.happcontrols.com/trackballs/56020000.htm

But there is no way in hell I am going to cough up $215+ for it.  Anyone have any suggestions on alternatives?  I am trying to get a small trackball to fit in my Atari cocktail cabinet so I can use the mouse on screen in my jukebox software.

Yes, buy a mouse which has a ball on top and then hack it.

Here is a quick example .... no idea what brand would be best for hacking though, but this is a sure way to reduce cost.

I second that.  I found a used (but in box w/software) serial trackball from about 1990 at a pc recycling center for $2.00, works great w/o drivers in XP and won't be much trouble to mount.  Obviously it was a lucky find, but they're out there, and you could just get something used or cheap online somewhere.

I bought a USB version of this on ebay for $15 shipped. Comes with a translucent ball. I'd be happy to take pix of the guts if you'd like? I am using it for a bartop project.

Touchpad?

I actually considered it.  I am going to use it 99% of the time for song selection in WinCab so...

i was thinking about checking out those happ mini trackballs after hearing about it. i didnt realize it was so much money though. that is way to much. there is some examples of trackball hacks on the front page you may be able to adapt to a smaller version. maybe if you get something working you can do a full out tutorial.

I've got an old (like 1998) Compaq notebook travel mouse that is actually a TB. The main problem is that the ball itself can't be much more than 3/4" - not exactly what you want. The ball is closer to what you would see on a rackmount server keyboard/trackball combo.

I don't have it with me (it's at my work), so I can't look up specs, but it's a PS2 unit with encoder wheels and can be yours for the low, low price of shipping. PM if you want it; I can look up more info on Monday.

Here is the guts of the Kensington Orbit. I haven't started mounting it yet. I will probably have to rotate the PCB 180 degrees and remap it somehow...

I have something at home, I can't remember the name of it, but it's an older mouse perfect i think for a cabinet.  Unfortunately I can't sell it, but i remember seeing a few on ebay.  it used a ps2 connection, and had some weight to it so it was great for spinning.

PM me to remind me and I'll get you the name.  It was not optical.

its a Microsoft ballpoint trackball, and while this is an ebay link to one with a serial adapter, you can usually find them with a ps2 adapter

Hey Frizzle, check with divemaster.  He will probably be able to get it for you much cheaper than the $215.

Just a thought,

I would say even if divemaaster could get it at half price then the cost would be still too steep for me   :P
