Questions on Book version of cabinet
« on: October 06, 2007, 06:41:57 pm »
I'm a little stumped (mainly tired) on some issues that I hope some of you might be able to help me with -

1.  I've mounted the speaker shelf but I cannot seem to find where the book specifies where the front edge of the speaker shelf should rest... how far back?  It's angled, so does the upper corner have to touch the 3/4" inch standard inset or the bottom edge?  I know this is important because it'll affect the marquee placement.

2.  The book states that the monitor shelf should be flush with the front of the cabinet and says to look at figure 22 - but in the figure, the monitor shelf is recessed 3/4" - I'm guessing flush, but maybe I'm not thinking far enough ahead and there's a reason for the recess.

Thanks!  Pic below of the cab's current status.

Hmmm... your speaker shelf looks a little too angled to me - I installed my speaker panel (pretty much) parallel to the top panel - the marquee light goes up there too and it makes it easy to accept the brackets for installing the marquee.  It looks like you could easily put something in there though.

Yeah, I thought it was a bit steep, too... but after re-reading the book and looking at the pictures (including the Mars Invasion project that also follows the book), the speaker shelf appears to be inserted correctly.  Luckily, I'm going to be using an LCD so I'm not worried about space.

That's roughly the same angle as mine.

I mounted my speaker shelf in line with the board on top of the cab. I ran into the same issue when building mine.

Xam,

Did you pull the monitor shelf all the way to the front, flush with the front edges of the cab's sides OR did you recess it 3/4" inch?

If the cabinet in the book is the original U1 here is a side view of it.  The speaker panel was very small.

I believe the part about the monitor shelf being flush is corrected somewhere in errata section on the book website. www.projectarcade.com

Also the speaker mounting instruction are on page 45 in the book. It then shows a pic on page 46.

It actually talks about this on page 2 hundred and whatever.  The speaker shelf (and the top) are both recessed 5/8" or so to make room for the marquee.

Page 200 and whatever... okay, that narrows it down ;)

I'm sure it's in there somewhere... I'm just a bit brain dead right now.  And now you say 5/8" and not 3/4" - so I better go read the book again.
