I thought this would be an intresting thread:
What are some thoughts on how  people have set up their own spy hunter controls?  i have a slikstik classic with spinner and am wondering what buttons work good for this type of game.

 :)

Spy Hunter is one of those classics that just needs the true controls to be any good.   A spinner may turn the car ok... but because of the shear number of buttons involved... it becomes a nightmare unless you can access them easily and quickly.

The other thing about spyhunter is that you truely need an analog pedel for throttle.  Because most of the game you have to ride in high gear - yet slow enough to keep from going too fast.   This means light pressure to keep at a set rate of speed... to outrun the enemies.   A digital controller will end up speeding up too fast when in high gear... and at low gear - the enemies can catch you too easily.

You need to be able to fire off your foward guns, and 2 special weapons at any notice... and yet, the Hi / Low gear is Pretty damn important as well...  as when you drop speed to avoid an accident... you will stall out unless you  downshift to low gear to get enuff speed to get back to high gear.

Its an amazing game.. very intense, fast, insanely difficuly... pure heaven  ^_^

Best to get a good analog wheel/pedal sets for this one.  Preferably one with many easy access buttons on the wheel itself.   The sidewinder I have works awesome with it.
Though Im sure there are others that would work just as well if not better.

Sorry though... a spinner alone isnt going to do the game justice.. and you wont be able to get very far/good at the game with such controls.

Xiaou2 is right.

Spy hunter cannot be played with any degree of success or fun unless you have appropriate controls.  I'm working on a spy hunter CP for my machine.  (I actually started the steering wheel before I did anything for the mame cabinet).

I've had some success in the mean time playing with a 2 button flight yoke.  I can control the steering and speed with the yoke's x and y axis. I set up one fire button for guns and the other for oil slick.  I have to use the keyboard for missiles and smoke (and to shift). Usually it is trying to find the button on the keyboard that causes me to crash.

I love spy hunter.  I origianally began to look for a dedicated spy hunter machine to buy when I discovered emulators. I used to rule that game!
