USB Panel mount connectors?
« on: October 05, 2007, 10:19:02 am »
I remember seeing in a thread some USB panel mount connectors, that could be used to connect a regular usb cable at the back, and basically give you a standard USB connector on the outside of your device.  Can't remember what thread it was on, nor who made them, but could sure use a couple of those  (want to extend a USB port from the board mounted in my PC to my LCD Topgun, without using the USB hub in my CP, and be able to disconnect it whenever it's not being used (for longetivy of the ledbar).

Anybody remember where I saw these things on here? :P.

I believe it was in the Mission Control thread now that you mention it.

I'll order a couple when I get paid next week, thanks for the Linkage :).

Don't worry about waiting for your pay.  You can do it for only a few dollars.  Check out how I did it here :D

With the sorry state of affairs of Electronics stores here in my area, I'd have to order the darn female connector anyway, and at that point it'd end up costing about as much as the pre-made panel mounted jacks.  There was a time tho that I would have not thought twice about a piece of breadboard, some solder & a setup like that.  Guess I'm just getting old and lazy :).

Ha!  I happenned to have those female USB ends lying around anyway.  That USB port in the earlier thread was done quickly after I'd had a Eureka! moment.

Here I've refined the art a little!  In this admin panel, I took the PCB holding the front USB ports and phono ports from the front of the PC itself, and remounted them behind the panel.

I had to extend the wires back to the motherboard, where they are connected with original plugs.  I also ran the sound signal through a  log pot to give volume control.  Finally, I attached an extra phono plug (that I pulled off an old PC speaker amp) at the back so that I could plug in my arcade cabinet's amplifier, or another if desired!

This cabinet is currently for sale on Australian ebay!   Search for "Betelgeuse Arcade Classics"
