Must Have Fighting Games
« on: September 27, 2007, 08:21:17 pm »
I know there was a thread about must have games on a fighting cabinet but I cannot find it. Does anyone remember this or should we start again?

Also what version of mame are you guys running these days?

Thanks

John

Well if you have a mame rom set then you have all the mame supported fighting games..
If your arcade is pc based.. Id suggest games like Melty Blood,Guilty Gear X,M.U.G.E.N,
You can also emulate consoles and have Marvel Vs Capcom 2.

Brian, I do have mame but rather then dump the entire thing on there I was looking for what the group considers to be the best fighting games. Rather then 300 fighting games I was thinking 20 - 30 of the most popular.

the street fighters, the mortal kombats, and the king of fighters will be atop most lists.

Heres a small list of what I would throw on there:

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3 (different enough games to have both)
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike
King of fighters 98
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
Vampire Savior
Vampire Savior 2
Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter
Marvel vs Capcom 1

Thats a pretty good starter list right there

Samurai Showdown (2 and 5 are favorites)
Last Blade 2
Waku Waku 7
Rage of Dragons

And I highly recommend tracking down the PC versions of Guilty Gear.

Well, what kind of fighters do you personally like? This thread has been done a lot, but it's still interesting to read whats on people's minds.

If you like 3d fighters (which are USUALLY button-mashers that anyone can play but are still a whole lot of fun), try things like:
Street Fighter EX 3
Rival Schools
Techromancer
Some version of Soul Calibur

For 2d fighters (the heart of fighting games), try:
Some kind of Guilty Gear
Street Fighter - all varieties, but Alpha 3 and III: 3rd strike are tops
Marvel V Capcom 2 & Capcom V SNK 2

Neo-Geo:
KOF - my favs are 2000, 2001, 2003
Last Blade 2
Samurai Shodown 4
Garou

I know I'm repeating a lot of people. They are that good.

I always enjoyed the original Art or Fighting in the arcades. Mortal Kombat (the first one) is a classic along with SF2 Champion Edition.

Well some of us would like to  ;), but it was popular enough that it deserves mention.

Wow, thanks gang, that is very helpful.

I like the MK Marvel and SF series myself but I knew there were lots of other good ones that I have never played.

I will start sorting those roms out to move over to the donor pc for this project.

Why is it that the Darkstalkers games are rarely mentioned in these kind of threads?

They have fantastic art and animation, an amazing variety of unique and interesting characters, gameplay just as smooth as the SF Alpha games, and best of all...humor!

All are great, but Night Warriors/Vampire Hunter is my favorite. Vampire Savior has more characters, but the art went downhill a bit.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

I think the problem with those games is that they are too similar to the SFII series, but the characters/moves lack the balance of the best of the SFII series.

They are hilarious, though, and the graphics are excellent.  I have them on my box, but rarely play them.

How many of these must have games use 7 buttons?  I want to build my control panel with 6 buttons for the players' right hands.  I could map the pinball buttons on the side of the cab as a 7th button, but I don't know how a player would be able to hit that mid-fight.

Most people do a hybrid SF / Neo Geo layout.  A row of 3 buttons on top, and a row of 4 buttons on bottom.

I haven't really played many games like that, but I'm up for it.  Just what is that 7th button usually for?  I really like my 6 button layout.  Maybe I'll hook up something custom that flips out on the bottom that can be triggered with your foot.  If the 7th button is for run or something like that, it would make sense.  Now that I think about it, it might be cool to have jump button that you trigger with your foot.  Something on the floor that you can comfortably rest your foot on.  I don't want people kicking my cabinet.

The seventh button is normally used to more accurately represent the NeoGeo style cabs.  NeoGeo uses 4 buttons in a curve A,B,C,D.  When in SF mode the extra button is ignored and when in NeoGeo mode the top row is ignored.

My guests are going to have to lower their lazy pudgy thumbies down to the bottom row for Neo Geo games then!  Kids today.  I tell ya.

Thanks for the info!  You saved me from hacking up my control panel to something that I probably wouldn't have been 100% happy with.  I think I would rather use three buttons in a row for pointer/middle/ring fingers and a lower thumb button anyway, especially since the bottom row of buttons are slightly to the left of the top row.
