Lusid plans and 21" monitor
« on: May 02, 2003, 01:32:13 pm »
Hi all.  I've been lurking on this board for a while and have decided to build my cabinet from scratch based around plans from Lusid.  However, I am wondering if anyone has built a cabinet from his plans using a 21" monitor.  I had a look through the examples page, but with little luck on finding an example.

I am concerned with the dead space around the monitor and am wondering how you dealt with it.  Too often, I've seen a really big cabinet, and a tiny monitor and personally don't like how that looks.  I can size the width of the cabinet no problem, but am more concerned with the vertical.

If you built it, did you change anything else to make it "fit" better?

Upgrading to a larger anything is out of the question as I already have the monitor and am lacking the funds for a t.v., or dedicated arcade monitor (believe me, I would love to drop in a D9200 but the $500 is too dear for me especially after the exchange to canadian funds.).

If you have an examples or built one, would love to hear from you.

Well.....as another n00b (whos lurked for years getting up the courage) I guess I'd say this:

You have two options:

1) Alter the plans to accomodate your 21" monitor  (ie: narrow the cab and shorten the overall height, or make the monitor-tray higher up

2) plan on getting a larger bezel.

Remember, those pics of MAME cabs that look..well...not to insult anyones hard work but....the ones that look kinda crappy, because its a big arcade cab sporting a 15" PC monitor in the center of 8 inches of black bezel all the way around, are just that:  15" monitors.......a 21" monitor isn't small, its probably slightly smaller than a 20" TV....

If you're worried about the "BIG BEZEL" syndrome, just dress it up with artwork.  You can also get away with a monitor mounted higher up with a thicker "bezel" at the bottom, thats always a good place for things like printed instructions, etc, etc.

I'm sure you'll be fine..good luck!

Here's a picture of my 21" monitor in a cabinet that is 30 inches wide. I used artwork to give the appearance of less bezel.
