My new project
« on: September 23, 2007, 10:58:37 pm »
I just picked up a 1940 Philco console radio (40-160) that was in pretty rough condition. I want to make it a jukebox. I am in the planning stage and am thinking I will remove the radio chasis and integrate a computer and speakers to it. I will use a LCD screen that will probably rise from the rear from a TV lift kind of structure. The controls are still a mystery but I have time as this cabinet needs a lot of TLC. I am about half done stripping the case. I think the the Art Deco furniture is just about the most attractive made and it will be fun to add some current technology to an old radio frame. Below is a link to what it looks like.

I have been intending to do this very same thing with a touchscreen.  I'm having problems locating the right cabinet locally, though.

One of the reasons I've passed on a few cabinets is because the face of the radio, the tuner and dials, were mounted like the first picture, which I feel would make it hard to view the screen, whereas I'm looking for cabinets like the second picture, where the user doesn't have to stoop to see the screen.

I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on how user friendly the vertically mounted screen will be.

I had the same problem finding the right radio. I was finding that the more easily the radio could be modified the less I liked its architecture. I finally decided that I would buy on that was never going to be original (mine was missing its grill material as well as had spray paint on it). I liked the idea of the first one you have but it really starts to lose some of the character of the second. I was thinking the flatter tops could be made to hinge from the rear and install the LCD screen at an angle inside. You could then "close" it to keep its look in tact. In the end I found this one 50 miles away and for $17.00.  I will take pictures and try a few things out. Below are photos before and after stripping.

I really like that one. I could not find one similar to that local to me. I would definetly find a way to delid that thing and hinge it from the rear.....

Hey Uncle T, thanks for the link.

Yeah, I keep an eye out on ebay.  Very little in my neck of the woods (Raleigh, NC).

I see a bunch in Michigan and Indiana for some reason.  People getting some pretty nice consoles cheap.

Then we are in the same neck of the woods. I've been watching craigslist for a radio or an old console tv as well. One got away from me the other day that would have been perfect -- About the height of a vintage radio and had two control knobs at the bottom (great for next page and volume control) and closing doors. Only $20 but unfortunately I was too late.

I was just given a fee computer to run the jukebox. It is a Gateway GP7 866. Works like a champ. The only thing I did was throw in an old ATI rage pro 9800 and loaded Ubnutu. It is running like a top. I attempted to use the Linux port of Multijuke and ran into problems. I spent an hour messing around and realized the intel fedora mother board has no onboard sound..... Guess I will need to dig up a sound card.

It me, who created MultiJuke.

It of course nothing I can due if soundcard is not present in the machine.

MultiJuke simple won't start up without a soundcard, but if FMOD packages is installed correctly, it should still write some error message abut it in multijuke.log?

Otherwise the graphics card should work, if I it newer than Ati Radeon 9500 and up (I assume you mean Ati Radeon Pro 9800?). This simple because MultiJuke is a OpenGL application. I used Althon 1.2ghz (underclocked) with a Ati Radeon 9600 as my graphicscard when I ported to Linux.

Details.... hmm
I think space Fractal hit it. No sound card = no startup for Multijuke. There was a log created and it was a FMOD failure, I just can't remeber the exact entry. I am sure its not your program. It may even be the fact that I am also cutting my teeth on Linux right now so sometimes it is not readily apparent whether I have followed the instructions correctly!

Still thinking about the TV Lift and controls, but I like the idea still so I will start putting pen to paper this weekend and attempt to plot out the design.

It look like FMOD was installed correctly, since the log file was actuelly wrote about it (hince it have passed the C init code to find FMOD).

MultiJuke seen it could init FMOD (installed correctly), but FMOD could not find a soundcard and hince MultiJuke quit. MultiJuke have no purcuse without soundcard.

I should state about it on the screen and then quit, but hince I created multijuke.log for most typical errors.

I really dont thinkk you need a screen saying that. The fact is if I had an idea that there was no sound card installed I would not have even considered installing the program as it seems kind of fruitless. I hope to pick one up today.

Got the sound card loaded and here is my problem. I cant run the program unless I am root, This is from the terminal:
andy@jukebox:~$ '/home/andy/multijuke/multijuke'
/home/andy/multijuke/multijuke: error while loading shared libraries: libfmodex.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

now if run as root:
andy@jukebox:~$ sudo su
[sudo] password for andy:
root@jukebox:/home/andy# '/home/andy/multijuke/multijuke'

Thanks Space Fractal. I should have listed the new thread. Although I bet when all is done we will probably discover much of the problem is me not your App!

I did build a frame to mount inside the radio so I can start figuring the layout and structure. Pics to come later, but It will probably stick out from the rear but with some black paint and the fact you only view it from the front should be ok.
