Concave or Convex Buttons- Which Do You Prefer?

I'm leaning towards Convex Buttons for my first cabinet and was wondering what y'all like better?

Concave, simply because they're the classic arcade pushbutton and were used in most games.

Convex is mostly on the Japanese games - I grew up with concave, so that is the one I prefer...

They just use crappy springs... Every button press lets out a horrible *sproing* noise.  The sanwas just have a nice solid POP when you tap it.

Can't wait to go home this weekend and build my new control panel with my new parts.  2 Sanwa sticks and 21 buttons! (8 per player + 5 admin type buttons)

I think the ones I prefer are from Seimitsu.
They came on the Jaleco cab I have, and are great.

No black ones avaliable for order on the website, can't even order the grey/black ones they have pictured. Did you talk to them directly or something? Would love some black OBSN-30s.

I'm concave, because I grew up with that in the arcades, and the only convex where on console controllers which felt very cheap compared to the arcade buttons.

But use whatever floats your boat; I'm sure there's high quality convex buttons too.

I'm gonna say that highest quality/performance buttons are currently convex and that concave are for people trying to re-create a "feel" from the past. Easy to see the divide between the classic and modern gamers here.

Just curious, why are they higher performance if they are convex?  I always likened it to PC keyboards.  Some of them have slightly concave keys and some are convex.  Neither really seems to make much difference (to me anyway).

Because most of the Convex buttons are japanese buttons.  They have nicer microswitches, less travel, and are more responsive in general

<3 Sanwa buttons.

Button shape != switch responsiveness

Although the point is taken ... FWIW, there are folks who like to tune their leaf switches for maximum responsiveness, which is not possible for most folks with microswitches.

In general concave buttons are significantly longer travel than convex, which does inherently mean less responsive.

Right now i've got 4 sanwa buttons and 2 concave happ buttons on p2 of my cabinet.

LP and LK suck compared to the other 4.

Button shape!=travel distance.

OK, I will be more obvious this time ...

What would be more useful to people trying to choose amongst buttons is a statement like "Sanwa buttons/switches are more responsive that Happs concave buttons/switches".

If I am not being clear, consider the fact that Happs convex buttons and Happs concave buttons use the same switches and have pretty much the same travel distance (at least according to the buttons in my box o' buttons).

The actual shape of the button top is irrelevant to the travel distance or switch responsiveness (it is like saying that ball handles are more responsive than bat handles).

And, as I tried to point out, generalized statements about travel don't necessarily apply to tuned leafswitches.

FWIW, for twitchy fighter stuff, I would use Sanwas ... but I am one of those oldtimers who is "trying" ( ??? )  to recreate an experience, although I really like my Galaga and Asteroids fire buttons to be hair trigger.

I don't know if I do or not, were they on playchoice cabinets? Only game I ever played on those cabinets was Castlevania and that was almost 20 years ago.  :o Currently though I want the best setup for fighters and as long as my wife doesn't find out how much they cost ("Whats wrong with buttons and joysticks you already have?") a set of Sanwas looks to be the best bet.

Sorry -- was a tongue-in-cheek shot at the "highest quality" comment (some folks maintain that Nintendo sticks are the highest quality sticks ever made).

For myself, I like leafswitches and concave buttons and have many that are 20+ years old and working fine (so can't really argue about the quality there).

I've messed with the controls on the tekken4/5 cabinets at the mall arcade. If those are the Sanwa convex buttons and the hallowed sanwa stick, then I don't like them. The convex buttons just feel cheap, and not arcade-like.
