Cocktail glass - 1/4" or 3/16" thick?

Midway and Stern cocktail cabinets have 3/16" thick glass.

I can't vouch for what Atari used or what Mr. Do or Frogger cocktails had.

Oh and don't waste your money on that ---smurfing--- tempered glass either. I use ordinary glass.

I am glad you use it too. I was talking to my glass man and showed him some pics of what all the glass I was buying was being used for. He said straight up '---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, you wouldn't need hardened glass for that, just use normal stuff'. He then got a small piece of glass and placed it on the  cutting desk and smacked it with his hand and it didn't break. He said because its going on a flat surface it is very difficult to break.

The difference in price is quite a lot too.

Yup!  The only way regular glass is going to break is if you TRY to break it...by smashing something in to it on purpose, etc.   The reason on-site cabs came with tempered is because well,  there were asshats out there who TRIED to break stuff.

just wanted to say real quick that its not just about being on a flat surface. have you ever taken a glass out of the dishwasher right after its dried and put cold water in it to drink. it explodes.

regular glass cant handle temp changes worth a crap. no matter the thickness.  My roommates busted the coffee table putting a ice cold beer next to a hot plate of food.

will it happen on a coctail. most unlikely. but just pointing out surface area doesnt help in all cases.

tempered glass usually isnt that much more. plus you have to wonder if its less prone to scratches.

I agree with your glass-man - I was a glazier many moons ago. The strength of glass is on it's face. Just remember to protect all edges; even the slightest tap from metal can send it into pieces. Being mindful of your boiling queso/ice cold beer placement is a good idea as well...

I think I'm going to go with 1/4" - it will look better aesthetically, IMO, if the glass is a little thicker.... just pray I can get the clips on though!

The glass clips on Midway and Stern cocktail cabinets are designed for 3/16" thick glass. Trust me on this. I wouldn't even try bending the clips to accomadate the 1/4" stuff.

Trust Ken.

I am not sure about the Midway cocktail as I have an Atari cocktail and I can assure you there is no way in hell I could fit a 1/4" piece of glass on the cabinet with the stock clips.  The only solution would be to get custom clips made.

While we're talking glass, I recently purchased graylite 14 tempered for my project, and apparently the option for 3/16th doesn't exist.  I opted for the 1/4th instead, but this was new to me, since I'm new to glass.

3/16" - damn.  Oh well, I trust Ken and I certainly don't want to make my own clips...

Just measured an original galaga top and it is right in between 3/16" and 1/4" ...so lets call it 7/32".  The glass I bought for my custom built cocktail was 1/4" and it's actual measurement is the same: 7/32".  The replacement midway clips that are available work perfect with it.  Got them here: http://www.mantisamusements.com/mrspacnos.htm

I would recommend getting 1/4" glass.

Really?  Cool.  I think deep down I want the 1/4" glass to give the top a little weight.  Worst case scenario is that I have to make my own clips somehow (OK, that's a terrible scenario) but if those clips you linked to allow for a 1" tabletop and 1/4" glass then I'll be all set.
