Short travel joysticks?

Hi everybody,

I have two joysticks installed and I would like to order a new pair. The reason is that they are not very sensitive.
They work fine but they have to be moved about two centimeters (or about one inch) to go from one direction to the opposite (e.g. left to right). I tried bending the metal tabs that push the microswithes but that doesn't work very well. I remember from playing in arcades that some joysticks have a much shorter travel.
Does anyone know where to get them and/or what the part numbers are so I can order them?

No idea how short is short, but I hear people complaining all the time about the short throw on the Mag-Stik.  Perhaps give them a try?

Great! I found the mag stick on the internet. Now I just have to find out whether I can install them in
my x-arcade joystickbox.

If you want a really good, sensitive, short-throw joystick: Get a japanese stick.

Sanwa or Seimitsu are the two best brands to go with.



I just ordered two of these from Lizard Lick and they're great.  I also have a Hori Real Arcade Pro joystick with a Sanwa stick... They blow the american sticks out of the water.  I've got a Street Fighter 3 cab with HAPP buttons/sticks that I hardly like playing on because the japanese ones are so much more precise.

I'm not sure how easily it would drop into an X-arcade, but I'm willing to bet it is doable.

and here i always thought my x-arcade sticks had a pretty short throw.  well, they actually travel pretty far, but the activate the switches at about 1/4 of the sticks travel.

On the x-arcade there is a 8 by 8 cm square hole routed out so it would be easiest if the plate around
the new sticks would just drop into that space.
And yes, the original sticks on the x-arcade activate quite early on their way to the stop, about 1/4th of the way
I guess, but if you want to change direction with whatever you are controlling you have to move the stick
 too far I think. This is a problem when I play Bubble Bobble where you sometimes have to move just one pixel
to be in the right position. I even went back to playing the game with a keyboard .
And that is just not right!

Don't see whats so funny about that.  Sanwa sticks are much much more sensitive than HAPP style ones.  Try playing a charge character on Street Fighter 2 with a Square gated Sanwa stick sometime.  It is fighting game nirvana,  Perfect Sonic booms straight into Flash Kicks, and vice versa.  Endless Balrog rushdown, etc.

Happ sticks are mushy and imprecise compared to the sanwas,  I have a number of both, and theres a reason i'm replacing the HAPP ones, they aren't as sensitive or responsive

If you want a 4/8 way that is switchable from the top check out the mag-stick plus that is on the same page fatfingers referenced above. As to whether they will fit in the stuff from Dream Arcades here is a quote from another thread.

These sticks will fit in your DA upright. However, they use different mounting holes, which isn't a big deal as our CP's are boltless.

However, you will need to use 5/8th in screws, unless you use carrage bolts.

Lastly, the MagStick Plus do have a very short throw. I have them at home, and while I love the sticks I still have not gotten used to them, as I'm normally playing on Supers at the shop.

Will the Ultimarc "Mag-Stick Plus"
 in addition to adding extra length ball top sticks
work with my dream arcades upright cab?
Currently I have what look like superjoys installed http://dreamarcades.com/partssticks/super.shtml

I want to make sure I won't need any other adaptors or anything. Did any one do this before? how far out will this extra length make it look? Does any one have pics of Ultimarcs "extra length ball top sticks" installed on a cab ? Would love to see a "throw" video of it in action with the added length Thanks!

I just took the whole thing apart. I remeasured the holes and they are actually not square but rectangular
8 by 9 cm so I think the mag stick(plus) will fit quite nicely. I will order one to see if I like it.
