WTB: Nintendo 4-way
« on: September 13, 2007, 03:15:48 am »
The ones I have are 8-way, and I want a 4-way for Donkey Kong. I would like to buy either a complete joystick, or just the restrictor. I think that is the only difference, please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks,
Paul

Good luck ...

I haven't come across any 4 ways. Only 8 ways. I haven't used a Nintendo 4 way in a long time but I'm not a fan. I prefer a WICO 4 way or even a Super in 4 way mode.

I have two nintendo joys that I cleaned up and restored them back to life if anyone wants to buy em. I would just go with a WICO if I were you (like lew mentioned). Nintendo joys are so 'clunky' feeling as is..

8-Ways of course but came from a vs' CP.

I only want the nintendo joy for Donkey Kong, I played that game a lot when I was younger, so I think I would prefer the original stick. I haven't tried the wico 4-ways yet. Does anyone know where to get one at a decent price?

If you can't find any 4-ways (they're hard to come by), here's a scan of the 4-way restrictor plate.  Print it out so that the "square part" (ignore the protrusions with the mounting holes) is the exact same width as a US quarter and then either make a set yourself with some sheet steel and a Dremel tool, or have a metal shop do it.

It's like vindication, isn't it Cheffo?

To the OP - you might consider using a Happ 4-way Reunion stick with a black balltop which can be purchased from Tornado Terry.  This is what I used on my Donkey Kong cabinet.  After a year and half now, the Happ joytick is still correctly functioning.

they are stuck by rust, they were left out in the rain..I'm loosinging one, I'm going Nintendo original  :o .
i dont think one is nintendo, that one is getting the hack saw if it doesnt come loose, i think that one has the ball top fused to the stick, how do you take these things off? the restrictor plate seems to be the same though. i think i saw a thread on another forum that a guy machined the restrictor plates and was selling them for a dollar.

Does everyone mess with these old parts or is it just me? I try to salvage as much as i can.

AwesomeAlbert - do you remember who was selling the restrictor plates?

all - I am sure everyone is correct about these sticks breaking down. I would like to have one ( or a few ) anyway. I have a modular panel, so there is really no commitment to any particular controller; I can use them all.  :)

Actually, that's mostly a running joke.  Nintendo joys really don't break much- they're built pretty tough.  They do have a tendency to get gummed up inside when the ball pivot gets too full of dust and old sticky soda.  A little solvent and new oil/grease, and that's solved.  There's also a small spring on the shaft that breaks sometimes and needs replacing.  But more serious damage is rare.

I've measured and redrawn the 4 way restrictor to size in illustrator, have a guy ready to laser cut them for me, but their software needs "IGES" file format for their cad software. I've never heard of that. Anyone?

I believe there are a few free converters from dxf to iges.

Also, when you get a quote let us know how much they are.  I'd be interested in a couple and there may be a few more people interested as well.

If I can get a count from people here, I can find out what it might cost to have them made. I should have mine in a couple of days, I'll let you guys know how it works out.

Just wanted to say 'cool' on this one.

While I personally hate the feel of Nintendo sticks and was a little overactive in pushing the buttons of a certain Nintendo stick fanboy, I think that producing 4-way restrictors is a very worthwhile project -- while I seem to see sticks with the 8-way restrictor plate fairly regularly, what people are looking for is the 4-way.

I would definitely pick up a couple of 4-way restrictors.

So,  to Kremmit and mushmouth ... just be careful that those sticks don't break !  ;D

Break? A NinTENDO? :)

That's why I'm getting a few and putting them in my parts box. Vs 8-way sticks are the same stick with a different restrictor, and they're easy to come by right now. I'm planning to put a FEW reverted-to-4-way sticks together and keeping them ready for if I ever lose one.

My new DK machine rules except for that 8-way joystick... i  get hung up on corners constantly and it drastically affects my game play. It happens multiple times per board... I want this corrected.

What's a fair price for these? I couldn't find them anywhere, so I have no idea. I'm not looking to make a bunch of  money off them, need  something to gauge against the price he quotes me...

Perhaps this 'restrictor repros' (off) topic should be broken out to the main forum.  And also maybe someone would notice this that can gauge the anticipated costs, like you asked.  Any chance a mod could pick this subtopic out and pluck it into a new thread?  (not sure if that's something they can or would want to do :shrug)
