Freestanding NOVA CP idea...give me feedback!
« on: April 30, 2003, 05:31:56 pm »
Ok, so here is my latest out-there idea for my GT (which i came up with when i was stoned, so it may not be realistic). I want to take a Golden Tee Control panel and box it in to the point that it is as high as a CP would be on a cabinet. This would be freestanding. Inside of it, i would hook up a MAS super NOVA that is connected to a GT 99 board. Then, i would just wire the trackball and buttons into the nova and run the cords from the nova to my TV, that way, I could play GT in my living room on my roomates 60 in TV rather than on my puny 19in cab. My only concern about this is that i would not be able to wire the controls into the NOVA, other than that it seems like a pretty appealing option

what the hell is a super nova?

Make your own gt style cp
Use a PC with tv out
GT PC

Now with cup beer holders!

http://www.massystems.com/SuperNova.html

the super NOVA system basically is everything required to play a Jamma game, minuse the board, with TV hookups. so you casn attatch a jamma board to a NOVA hook it up to your TV, and play that way without a cab. It would be much cheaper for me to get a NOVA than to get a PC to put in the bottom of this thing.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Just make sure the base is stable enough that you can't knock it over when you slam the trackball.

how could i wire it? from what i understand, the NOVA system is designed to accept their super pro stick hookup (the specific hook up i am not sure of). Everything with this concept seems doable, but b/c i know nothing about wiring, i dont know how i could get the NOVA to accept the trackball and buttons

To be perfectly honest, the nova just sounds like a power supply, scan converter, and control panel with jamma harness.

You really only need the power supply and scan converter part. The trackball and buttons will have to wire directly to the GT99 board using a jamma connector made by yourself. (or whatever method the original trackball used to connect to the board in the arcade game)

If you are going to use a jamma board all you really require are the following:

1.  Jamma Harness
2.  Trackball
3.  Arcade Power Supply
4.  RGB to NTSC converter
     http://www.jrok.com/index.html
5.  Control panel with buttons and joystick

With these components you can wire up a Supergun that runs any JAMMA board on your TV.  The control panel with buttons and joystick will allow most jamma game to be run.The trackball is wired directly to the GT99 board.

This is assuming that the GT99 board uses a regular arcade monitor.  If it is med res or higher you would have to use a different scan converter.

Other than not having to wire that up, another advantage that NOVA seems to have is that it comes with audio outputs that i can hook into a stereo sound system. How expensive would it be for me to get a jamma harness, that converter, the power supply, to make my own supergun?

You can hook the outputs of almost any jamma board to a stereo sound system.  Most however give only mono on 2 channels but some give stereo.  The outputs of a jamma board will usually feed speakers directly so they have plenty of drive for a stereo system.

Less then $100 for the components you mentioned.  I think you already have a trackball.

how about you wait a bit until x-arcade comes out with their trackball controller. most likely it will be cheaper than the nova stick. If you dont like the trackball just use the electronics from the controller and make your own.
golden tee golf will be included when you purchase a x-arcade trackball.
just a thought.

Happ is selling a complete repro GT Fore control panel for $180.  It's on the trackballs page.

I'm getting a message that it needs direct x 5.0 or higher on startup.  When I click ok it shuts it down.  Tried running in win 98 compatibility mode but no luck.

Does anyone know where i could find an example page of a control panel podium/pedestal like the one i want to do? or even better, find plans or dimensions for one that i could go off of?
