Change Wico Joystick to 4-way?
« on: April 30, 2003, 05:01:29 pm »
I have a balltop Wico stick (8-way) and wonder if there is a way to convert it to 4-way.

If anyone has done this, how are the results/gameplay?

Thanks!  8)

I was told that the 2 major changes were:

1 a smaller actuator square piece.

2 a diamond shaped insert rather then the round.

I can see replacing the end portion or sanding it down but cannot see replacing the insert unless you have a pattern from an original 4 way to go by.

It's actually not an insert it's the whole bottom of the stick. The stick is in two pieces, the top is pretty much the same between a 4 way and 8 way with the exception of color (4 ways are usually grey). the bottom of an 8 way has a round hole in the center of it and a 4 way has a diamond shaped hole in the bottom of it.

Magnet-Eye,

If you have the same stick as me it has a white round plastic actuator on the bottom that is .6 inches in diameter. The kit is supposed to have another one that is .5 for 4-way.
If you can find one of these it soes work in 4-way the same way as the supers do - It does not have a restricted "diamond-shape" feel but it is prevented from hitting diagonals.

I had an extra 4-way actuator that I sanded down to .5" and it works but it was no fun!
I attached it to a bolt and ran it in my drill press and sanded for about an hour!
If you can find someone that has one it would be much easier but good luck!

my stick has a white, sqaure shaped piece that activates the micro switches... these switches are attached to a plate, which is screwed to the rest of the joystick.

the rest of the stick, the main part, has a black plastic housing that is "diamond shaped," is this what you guys are talking about?

hmm...i better rip it out of this CP and look closer.

Ah, you have a microswitch Wico balltop. I have a couple of those (at least I THINK they are Wico). If it is the one with the rubber grommet inside (instead of a spring), then I don't see much any way to convert it to 4-way. But, man do those sticks feel good.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Yes - you do have a different stick - mine is a 4/8 way leaf Wico with a round actuator - sorry.
