Powering Up and Down with Surge Protector

Hi all,

Just wondering if it's perfectly safe to power up/down components like an arcade monitor, speakers, etc. with the button on a standard surge protector (not like a Smartstrip or Sears Auto Power Center). In other words, I'd leave the power button activated on the monitor, speakers, etc. but use the surge protector's switch to power them up and down. I don't want to risk any damage.

That would be no different than the smartstrip.  Just make sure you shutdown your computer first and then shutoff the powerstrip.

thats how I wired mine.

1 surge protector(A) comes into the cabinet, the computer and another surge protector(B) is plugged into it. Surge protector A is always on, so the PC is always on. I flip the switch on the second surge protector (B) to power on the monitor speakers and marquee

I did that on my first cabinet.  I removed the switch from the powerstrip, lengthened the wires going to it and mounted the switch into a hole in the side of the cab, then I just hung the 6 outlet strip inside the cab and plugged everything into it.  I mounted a seperate reset/power off button near the switch and connected that to the MB.  Works great to this day, n ice cheap and simple

I actually cut open a cheap 10 foot extension cord and wired a switch in there.  Then I can plug in a power strip and have the switch for it on top of my cab.  Seemed easier than hacking up an actual power strip.
