Windows RAM drive build
« on: September 05, 2007, 04:31:49 pm »
Anyone know how to configure/install windows so that when it start it expands and runs in RAM? That way it can be shutdown with no fragmentation or loss of data. Obviously this would have to be a sripped down version of windows with is fine just wondering if anyone has done this yet...

By "ram drive", I assume you're referring to the traditional ram drive created from internal memory and not a USB thumb drive right?  I know you can run BartPE (which is a stripped down version of XP) from a CD and also from a USB thumb drive.  Maybe this method could be adapted to what you're looking for?

Edit:
Here's something closer to what you're looking for, maybe.  Scroll to the bottom:

A few more improvements have been added, the standard project can now use a windows 2003 CD as source and produce a 48Mb ISO that will boot and run from RAM and also use explorer as the default shell and filemanager.

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish will improve anything.  If this is a dedicated cab, I don't see the benefit especially when it comes to fragmentation.  Fragmentation only haves when there's lots of read and writes, but with the typical mame setup, once you have all the software load plus the roms.  There really not much writing going on after that.

And with a ram drive, each time the system starts up, you will have copy the stuff over to ram, same more time lost than saved.
