Xarcade with Vista
« on: September 04, 2007, 12:24:19 am »
Just wondering if anyone else had problems getting the DIY board recognized through the Vista operating system.

XP seems to be fine once it is recognized, but Vista has problems.

Now it could be the actual connector, but my game consoles work perfect(PS2 and Dreamcast).

I am trying PS/2 or USB with no luck.   It just detects the board as a generic USB.   Is there a setting that can be used to get it to act like something else?

Are there any drivers ready to download?

I will be calling the guy at xarcade, but more education will at least help me in what I should ask.

Thx in advance...and I am almost there with my arcade being finished!

i just hooked my x-arcade 2 player unit that i gutted up to my vista pc and it works fine.  i used the PS2 connector.  the usb adapter they sent me was a generic adapter called a Y-Mouse, but i cannot find it, so i couldnt test it with USB.  if you are connecting it via PS2, make sure you have a PS2 keyboard plugged into the x-arcade or it will not work.  i booted my vista pc up with just the x-arcade but it wasnt recognized.  i shut it down, hooked up a ps2 keyboard to the passthrough port, and booted back up.  now the x-arcade is working just fine.

on a side note, please tell me you are not running vista on your cabinet...

Vista I think is great.   Problem..it is beta.   In a year, it will be fine.   Though it is the future, ME it is not.   So many people talked crap on XP, now they hug it.  Vista has so many great options, and the main MAME dev likes it, so cool!

As for the PS/2...got that working, and I may have to go that route.   Getting a new cable though, so I will report back.

So I answered my own question, just like you reported(thx!).  Vista does work fine with PS/2.   USB..not sure yet.

Vista utilizes the most out of Mult-core.  Great for newer games which are also in my cab.  End of story.

Sucker/pioneer...depends on how the cookie crumbles.

For me, other then a few side problems, Vista is hands down faster in multi-applications.

Also, data access blows XP away.     Try to have a bunch of files in a folder and time VISTA vs XP.   Hmmm is it even close?

There are so many good points for VISTA, that all I can say is see for yourself.    I didn't choose the system though, I chose the computer, and it came with the baggage.

That said, the system is very nice, and I am really contemplating switching my main computer over from XP.   Getting better all the time, and MUCH MORE STABLE!

UPDATE!!!

I finally got it working under Vista.   Turns out it had nothing to do with drivers or the operating system.    It was the underpowered factory USB's on my computer!

Though Xarcade should work with all USB 2.0 computers, I guess some of them act a little funky.

To solve the problem, I plugged in a PCI USB 2.0 and it works perfectly!

Ipac and Xarcade together forever.     Pics in the other forum soon, I have so much to share!!

If there's an operating system that's unstable, I feel I should be the one to get paid to find bugs instead of forking over a good amount of money for it. Even my much-loved Mac OS X had that problem, though. 10.1 was the first one that was stable enough to use on a daily basis. I guess it's just how that industry works.

Glad you got the Xarcade working.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

Interesting.  I wonder if people having problems with the LCD Topguns disconnecting (power issue presumably) would have more success with those PCI USB slots.

glad you got it working.

as for vista, i'm not bashing it, it just isnt ready for mainstream use yet.  I have it running on my main PC, but I still find myself going to one of my xp computers now and then to do things.  as for the speed, i havent noticed any difference in speed from xp to vista...other than vista seems to be a little slower now and then.  THe nice thing about xp is that it is pretty much rock solid now and will run on older hardware alot better than vista will.  with xp, i can run my cabinet with only 512mb of ram and everything is OK, but if you try to run vista on a pc with only 512mb of ram, be prepared to wait for everything to load.    if you have a relatively fast computer, it isnt that big of a deal....but alot of us arent running high end machines in an arcade cabinet, so XP is a better choice.

Xp seems to choke up if you have say a couple of hundred files in a folder and you try to click on them and then click on something else.

This seems to be true on 98 as well.

Vista accesses them all in SECONDS and what is better, you can also scroll down with ease without it freezing up as well.

I notice this alot.

Vista has a slower shutdown, and it has a hell of alot more security, but as far as drivers and what not...just some slight nuisances like running under admin mode etc.    Nothing hasn't ceased to work, it just needs a little research.

For multi-core Vista seems to be much faster.

Still, either operating system is fine with me.    I really can't say I prefer one that much over the other.   I am more used to XP, but Vista is getting easier all the time.

As for gameplay, I haven't noticed slowdown at all.

The USB problem was absolutely hardware related though.     Everything works awesome now, and I still can't believe I got it all happening now!
