diagonal directions not working in mame
« on: August 31, 2007, 02:36:43 pm »
ive noticed for a while that my upper left diagonal direction in mame doesnt work very well, if at all.  im using Happ Super8's btw, and ive changed out the microswitch but no luck.  every other direction works fine, but the diagonal upper left seems to not work.  ive secured all the connections, but even so...it wouldnt make sense for it not to work because my up and left directions work fine.  what other things can i check?

Is the joystick's throw physically limited in that direction?  If the joystick hole is to small, or off center somehow, it could limit the throw so that the joystick actuator ring does not strike both microswitches.
If this is an intermittent problem then it may also be a bad connection or solder joint.

Have you pulled out the stick to make sure that both switches are physically being pressed? It would make sense for up and left to work, and then up and left pressed together to not work.

If you've verified that both switches do press at the same time, then check in MAME to make sure you haven't accidentally excluded diagonals in your input mapping (ie P1 left = Left AND NOT Up).

okay i just tested it...

the diagonals "work" but you have to be like, right at the precise direction in order for it to work.  ive had these supers for a while now (since 03)....do they "wear out"??

They can.  The metal lever on the switch can bend, the actuator can wear, the pivot ball can wear, the spacers can wear, you can flip the actuator to 4-way mode and forget about it  ;), among other stuff.  The first one is the most common, and the others take a lot of use (or alcohol/drugs for the last).
