Which Sound card? 120155319450
« on: August 28, 2007, 01:08:04 pm »
hey

im building a DOS cab with arcade os and MAME and DOScab (jukbox software)

i obviously need to get a sound card that works with all of these !

i have been looking around and figured that its just easier to get on ebay and buy a old PCI card rather than try and get a SB Live! 5.1 i got to work!!

will this card work?  Item No. 120155319450

and if not whats the best card to look out for? as i really want something taht i plug in and works !

thanks

I am not to sure about the card you picked out, can't look it up now, but any sound card with dos support would work.  Probably just have to make sure you can still find the dos drivers first and thats it.

If you can, grab a sound blaster 16 pci.

Doing a quick search on the Sound Blaster website shows they don't have DOS drivers for the SB Live! card.

Try sticking with an SB, SB16, or even try a PAS16 card.

If in doubt check the manufacturer's website and see if they have DOS drivers for the card you are interested in.

Sadly, crackly sound is a hallmark of onboard audio.  :(

I've never noticed. But OEM PC speakers sound so ---smurfy--- that ---smurfy--- onboard audio would be impossible to notice. You think it's because of bad shielding or a ---smurfy--- decoder?

I had a right messabout getting sound for dos to work,
if i was you id buy a board with an ISA slot if you can find one (ebay !).
I have a ISA soundblaster 16 and sound blaster 2.0 and
both work perfect and sound nice.

It all comes down to motherboard, quite a few dont support pci soundblaster
devices. Asus p4c800 deluxe does, most pci soundcard works with this board for me but SIS chipsets - forget it :( , and most new motherboards wont touch a dos pci soundcard.

I got my SB Live to work under DOS, but it was VERY picky about what slot and IRQ # to use.
NO MORE!!
