hey guys thought I would share some results of playing around with the chd's on my mame system & my main desktop...I was pleased with what a intel dual core can do.

First sytem is a AMD 4000+ 64 chip, 2 gig kingston hyperx ram...pci arcadevga, this motherboard does not clock well..I can only get 2241 bench mark on pctuneup.com.  I have a same setup with a Gigabyte motherboard & i can get a 2600+ bench mark with overclocking on my racing setup. I have been testing some of the chd's I can run most of them below are 4 that will run but you cannot play due to poor frame rate.

1. Carnevil
2. Mace: the dark age
3. Gauntlet legends (of course this wont run on anything)
4. blitz 2000

Then just for testing I loaded mame on my desktop which is a overclocked intel 6600 with 4 gig of corsair hyperx memory with vista bench mark is 3400+, when i was running xp i could get a benchmark of 4000+, 8800 video with 320 meg
1. Carnevil runs perfect
2. Mace: the dark age runs perfect.
3. Gauntlet runs better still not playable
4. blitz 2000 is almost playable, if I was running xp or if had maybe a cpu 2 steps higher blitz would be playable, just wanted to try it out.

It would be great if someone had a main system with a few more horses than mine could try blitz 2000.

You should post your results on the MAME benchmarking site.

Do you have a link & i will put this up there, after my testing Im going to switch my amd 4000+ to a amd dual core with a very tweaked xp,computers are so cheap now, I can do this for nothing.  I can prob. get the speed on the amd dual core, up to my dual core running visa, since vista slows my sytem down so much.  Also I have noticed that the last several mame updates are adding to the chd a lot.
thanks

  • Don't make a fuss, I'll have your Spam!
I just finished building up a x2 6000, I'll have to revisit the CHD's tonight and see what I can do.  (As long as Guitar Freaks is good, that's all I care :) )

Divemaster, yes Vista is not very good for gaming.  Make sure you have all the latest updates for Vista, as there are many patches coming out now that make Vista more efficient/faster (more bearable  ;) )

I was under the impression that MAME was processor dependent, not ram dependent.

I know most people state 4 gig of ram is a waste of money but right now you can get 2 gig of xms memory for $67.00 after rebate & it made a big difference.

  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Just wondering if Blitz and Blitz 99 are playable on that setup or do they run the same as Blitz 2000?  Thanks.

All non-gold versions of Blitz as well as Carnevil run on the same Seattle hardware.  The graphics are the big issue here in terms of emulation as they are high-end 3dfx (something around the Banshee or Voodoo 4 era).  Gold versions of Blitz and Showtime on NBC run on Vegas which is fairly similar.  I believe Gauntlet Legends runs on hardware similar (or identical) to Vegas, but branded Atari.

If you want to play Blitz, it's far, far cheaper to find a deal on the actual arcade setup than to purchase enough PC hardware to emulate it.  A Blitz 99 board working with HDD can be found for $70-100 in many cases.  Of course, if you have other uses of that PC hardware, then it's certainly something to consider.

As far as RAM, the extra could be very usable as cache for the HDD/CD image.  Be aware that Vista itself can eat up almost a gig if you leave the rather worthless eye candy on, and 32 bit Vista (and XP) can only effectively use 3GB in most single application scenarios due to the kernel/userspace split.
