Hotrod Se and that ugly purple
« on: August 21, 2007, 11:06:37 am »
I got the hotrod years ago in college when i couldn't afford to build a control panel from scratch (choices were food or control panel... hmmmmm).

So it's now being cut down to fit my Solar Fox cabinet.  My dad is coming over later this week with his power tools so we can install the control panel and I can get to finishing this project.  If I have a moment i'm going to try to measure out the CP buttons, but knowing my dad he's going to want to mount the sucker and go home.

and I would measure the CP myself, but the darn thing is at his house.

Does anyone have the basic measurements to control panel of the hotrod?  I really need to be rid of that butt-ugly purple.  I already torn off the ugly hotrod sticker.  But that purple is just.. bleh!

In this case I would just sell it and build my own to my liking.

well he wouldnt get much for it selling it. his best bet it just to make a control panel for the cab then put the hotrod guts inside of that. Its what I did until the hotrod encorder's tming crystal broke off the encoder, then I just put an Ipac in it's place but my cherries and wires are still from my original hotrod

you mean she  ;)

But I live in a condo and I don't have room for constructing anything, nor do I have the tools (my dad does but that becomes a pain in the butt since he lives about 45 min away).

Anyways, I have replaced the encoder with an i-pac, dad chopped off the sides of the hotrod, and I am adding a few very small buttons (i can't think of the name but they're like momentary push buttons.  They are red and tiny.).

But this has been a father daughter project, and I don't want to make my dad do all of the wood work, and that's what would happen if i went to go with a DIY control panel.... and I'm not that mean :P

But I'm not asking for the length X width.   That wouldn't matter to me since the unit has been physically modified (and beside that's what mr. tape measurer is for).  What I am asking for is a "button placement" map, or something along those lines... you know a diagram that tells you the distance between each button and the joysticks, ect.

Does anyone have that?

Otherwise i'll try tracing it.

My sincerest apologies!  When I recut a new CPO for my hotrod I just clamped the 2 pieces of wood together and drilled using a spade bit. You could lay the hotrod over the new CP and trace the holes then drill. I honestly have no clue of the actual measurements and I cant seem to find the thread that listed the capcom specifications (all I can find is the Mortal Kombat specs)

The way I did it worked out pretty well.

wish I could be of more help ma'am

Do you need the measurements so you can transfer the placement to a new CP?    If you you can use one of the existing Joystick with 6 button templates and just add the extra button where it feels good to you.

I think she's looking to design a custom CPO.  The measurements are for the placement of buttons in the artwork?

I like what you did (i'd change the design to suite my personal taste, but i like yours).

I can easily take a sheet of paper and just trace, i just figured that might not allow the correct measurements to be made.  I mean it's be easy to just have a basic traced shape that goes around the buttons but I'm not sure if I want to go with that style.

Let me do a search for 6 button templates, i figured hotrod tried to do something "unique" (aka half-thought out) and therefore didn't apply the traditional button layout

On a positive note:
Dad came over yesterday, and after having many beers, ordering pizza, a lot of cursing and problem solving we completed the following:
-the coin door was placed in and wired
-the control was re-wired and set-up so all i have to do is drill it in when I am ready to do so
- Ultimarc's 4 to 8 way stick was fitted into the 1player hotrod spot (and may I say that was a difficult task considering the happ's controls and ultimarc's DON'T have the same panel plate measurements

So big triumphant moment... dad's got the quarter and he puts it in the coin slot... no magical "ka-ching" noise comes from the machine.

We tried it a few more times... start pressing buttons.

Long story short, i ordered the i-pac VE chip, unknowing that several years ago i bought the I-pac2 version.  So I had the wrong  :censored: chip for the board  :-\  (i ordered this part when on vacation.)  See i figured since I got the i-pac when I was poor and in college, i went the cheap-butt route.  Turns out i actually muscled out the extra $20 to get the better version.

So i've ordered the new chip.  The bezel has not been cut yet.  I plan to go to home depot and get some paint to touch up the solar fox cabinet.

I have several beer guzzling COD clan members coming to my house next friday.  I haven't touched this project in over 2 years until we (boyfriend and I) decided to throw this party.  I figured it would be fun to play with between rounds of speed quarters.

As far as I know/can tell the street fighter portion of the layout is dead on to the capcom machines I've run across, and I haven't played nearly enough Neo Geo machines to tell how accurate the neogeo button is, but it "feels right" when playing KOF98.

I gave up trying to design a CPO that had an area that separated the background from the controller area, so I just made a nice graphic that lent well to buttons and sticks poking out of it. The Ou (beyond Human) symbol is from Akuma (its not a Ten, that means heaven) and I also have it tatted on my neck.

Make sure you posted up some pix when you're all done.
