New Fighter thread - that other one is just too brutal
« on: August 18, 2007, 09:51:40 pm »
Been gone for a long time, returned a few weeks ago but have only been lurking until now.

<edit> So which fighter is best (including MK and SF.)  and which are most accessible to fighting game noobs (like me.)  I vote Tekken 2 or 3 based on all of 60 min spent on fighting games.  :D </edit>

I was following the other fighter thread http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=70147.0 but it is a train wreck and has been completely hijacked.

Personally, I have never liked fighters and was usually inclined along CheffoJeffo's opinion of them, but was curious to read that thread to see if there were any games I was missing out on.

RayB mentioned Tekken 1/2, so I tried those out.  I REALLY enjoyed them.  For me, the controls on this game are everything: One button for each limb is fantastic.

So what are the differences between Tekken2 and Tekken3 (other than better graphics) and which of those two games is better?

BTW, MAMEinfo lists Tekken3 as having 6 buttons but as far as I can tell it only has 4; am I missing something here?  ( I have been playing it in ZiNc as my computer is too slow for MAME.)

Tekken 3 adds sidestepping for all chars, more reversals, and is generally faster among other things.

Tekken 3 only uses 4 buttons, but in the input test menu 6 buttons are displayed.  Button 3 from the jamma harness is unused but you can still make sure it is connected properly through tekken3's input test.  Buttons 4 and 5 come from the kick harness.

I'm not sure about the sixth button, never had six buttons hooked up when I was in that menu.

Go into service mode, you'll see what I mean.

Thanks for the info on Tekken.  I just edited my first post because I realized that I forgot to ask the main question from the other thread.

Tekken 1 and 2 are good but 3 was where the game series really took off IMHO. I still prefer the Soul Calibur games, though. Like Tekken's special moves, SC's are usually an order of button presses using one move to follow up the last. SC also lets you move freely in three dimensions at all times. You also might check out Soul Edge/Blade. It's technically the first in the series, but it plays a lot more like Tekken. It also has a meter so that if you block too much or use special attacks too much you'll break your sword and have to fight without it.

One thing that turned me off of picking up a lot of fighting games was the long list of moves for each character. For pretty much all of the Capcom and SNK games they usually fall into one of three categories:

1. Quarter-circle/half-circle forward (rotate from down or back to forward) and then press a button
2. "Dragon Punch" (press forward, then immediately down and rotate to foward followed by a button press)
3. Charge moves (hold back or down for a second or so and then press the opposite direction and a button)

If you just try these motions with a variety of punch and kick buttons you'll pretty much find all of the moves for each character.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag were my fave tekkens to play (tekken Tag is basically Tekken Trilogy with tagging in and out).

When it comes to 3D games, Soul Blade will always hold a soft spot in my heart, it was a SUPER amazing game especially considering when it came it.

For me it always seems that fighters with multiple sequels that one of the middle games is "best" Street Fighter II:CE, Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Tekken 3, etc.

I am a little surprised no one has come forth defending crap like Tattoo Assassins. I had fun playing Time Killers as Mantazz and Rancid, but damn if death isnt near impossible to beat.

For just a fun time, check out Karate Champ. It's hard to find a good working VS machine and building a machine with four 4way sticks just for karate champ is too much work.

I was going to post this link in the other "fighting" thread but after the topic switched I didn't bother and besides it was pretty comical. Anyway, this top 20 list is over a year old but most of the standings would probably still hold true today if they made another poll. There's the top 20 list but also some honourable mentions on the very last page if you're interested in trying them out. It's also cool that they do a little review of each game as they go.
Check it out here.

For the lazy peeps here was the break down:

Top 20:

    20. Virtua Fighter
    19. Street Fighter Alpha 3
    18. Garou: Mark of the Wolves
    17. Tekken
    16. Tekken 3
    15. Samurai Shodown II
    14. Super Street Fighter II Turbo
    13. Capcom vs SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001
    12. Guilty Gear XX: The Midnight Carnival
    11. Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
    10. Mortal Kombat
    9. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution
    8. Tekken 5
    7. Mortal Kombat II
    6. Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
    5. Soul Calibur
    4. Super Smash Bros Melee
    3. Killer Instinct
    2. Soul Calibur II
    1. Street Fighter II - The World Warrior

...and you can see the honorable mentions and misc facts on this page

#1.)Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.

Amazing sprite animation. Uber tight controls. Very stylish and well rounded characters. Not all flashy and over the top like all the capcom/marvel crossovers....

#2.) Capcom vs. SNK 2

A good fighter...though it has some issues. Namely they cheaped out and rehashed old sprites from other games instead of updating them to match other cleaner sprites.

#3.) Guilty Gear

Fast...furious...and really damn good sprite animation.

#4.) Mortal Kombat II

Purely because its a friggin classic. I pumped so many quarters into this puppy.

#5.) Fatal Fury (Garou) Mark of the Wolf

Best SNK fighter IMO. I just love this game.

I'm not a big fan of Tekken or other 3d Fighters.....just could never get into them.

Third strike has to be the best in terms of substance.

It's just complex enough to be interesting, but simple enough that it doesn't bog you down.

Either you love parrying or you hate it.

Personally,  I enjoy nothing more than jumping in, parrying my roommates dragon punch, and comboing for the kill.

Street Fighter III was a bit of a let down, but by the time 3rd strike came out it was a lot closer to the game it should have been at first release. I still would have liked to have seen a lot more characters from previous Street Fighters; Im a huge mark for Dan, an under powered shotokan for the win.

1. Street fighter II- hands down for me, this is the game that started it all.
2. MKII- Because it was the era of GORE.
3. Killer instinct - two words- "UUUUUUuuutra COoooooombo"

those would be my top 3 close behind would be virtual fighter 1-2, I still dont get the appeal of soul caliber, that game is CHEAPPPNESS seroiusly you can beat people with your eyes closed.
