Cabinet in white?
« on: August 17, 2007, 07:28:41 pm »
I've noticed most cabs are done in black, either with some sort of melamine and then painted or plywood and then painted.  I've seen some rare cabs in white, and even one in pink.

But I don't think I've seen any cabs in white.  Is it just because it's not the true 'authentic' arcade cab, white gets dirty, or all of the above?

Just curious.

Maybe for the same reason all computer cases now come standard as black instead of white  :dunno

My Galaxian is white, and will remain white.  I think Spacies made a white cocktail cab if you do a search.  I say go for it, just make sure you double check the "white after Labor Day" rule.

How do you find the dust or dirt on the cab? How bad are the imperfections?

I actually just picked up one of those little galaxian sized cabs that is white right now, but the laminate on it currently is really crappy.  It is made from particle board, so painting is out of the question.  I am thinking of relaminating it in white, but I really want to find some high gloss white, give it an i-arcade(apple) look.

There is really no reason you can't do it in white, but it will take more time as you will have to protect it some more.

As for authentic, doing it in white will have no effect.  If has the right shape, a good control panel, and good marquee/control panel artwork, white won't matter.

Cheers.

The white rocks!
Just make sure you build them from Meltecca/Melamime so you can clean it.
I visited a burger bar that has one of my white machines and it was still looking great after 5 months.

I almost went with white for my cab but eventually went with red. Mine was originally a copy of the Sega convert-a-cabs like Frogger came in.

Sega made quite a few of their convert-a-cabs white. They're pretty much all white or wood-grain (like Frogger was).

Sega also made a bunch of white cabinets in the early 90's such as Virtua Fighter. There have been a couple projects converting these. It's surprising how good the chrome t-molding looks on these.

I have a viruta fighter cab that was deditcated and it looks great and whenever I get a dirty spot I use bleach lol

also instead of painting like I had thought I was going to after sanding it I noticed it looked like it was new again after the fine sand paper and I ended up leaving it like that instead of painting it.

Well the machine gets little to no use and it's in a low traffic spot, so IT STILL LOOKS AS GOOD AS THE DAY I FINISHED IT!  :P   You'll notice though, the FRONT is black (textured vinyl adhesive). (Melamine for the sides)

I've visited an old arcade recently, and all the old white machines are all dirty, with shoe scuff marks all over the bottom fronts.

that is a flaw with mine is the shoe marks on the bottom but I am going to use a 8 inch wide piece of grip tape from skateboards or similar to cover it and protect it again.

I like the look of that Galaxian cab, I remember one of those from years ago at the beach in Misquamicut, RI in some little hot dog/cheese fry place :)

I think cabinets in white look great.  It really makes the artwork pop.

I've seen an originally Namco Rally-X which was on white as well as a Screw Loose that a guy made out of a custom Q*bert cabinet.  Both look awesome.

I'd go with white on a custom cabinet for sure.

Still torn on the color but I know a guy in a steel fabrication place so I'm going to put on aluminum diamond plate for the kick plate.  I think it will add a nice pop and prevent the cabinet base from being thrashed.
