Star Wars Cockpit
« on: August 05, 2007, 04:51:47 pm »
Hi! :-)
By Searching pictures of the Cockpit of the Millenium falcon (for a future project)  I recently found some topics on this (great!) Forum which talk about searching SW Cockpit measurements and Scratch build SW Cockpit projects by using the measurements recently taken by a member of the forum.

I have realized the Atari Cockpit :-)  I started this project in March 2006. At this time, there was no measures informations about the SW Cockpit, so, I decided to build it by using some pictures found on Internet and I tried to guess the measures. Of course, during the construction, and at many times, I had to correct or rebuild some parts of my Cockpit. And sure, my Cockpit still has some measurements errors (minor, I think) because a picture can't give exact information.  But never mind, realize this cabinet was a game. It was a great pleasure to make it. Now, I can play "Star Wars",  it is one of my favorite arcade games. I played this game when I was young but not as often as I wanted: This game was expensive. So, own a reproduction of a  SW Cockpit is a dream of child.
This project has been realised totally "from Scrath" (I used no Atari parts, all has been built).  You will notice that I took some freedom on the creation of some parts of the Cockpit... It was a will, I didn't want to make an exact reproduction but a Cockpit which pleased me today :-)
For example, I didn't use the original Side Arts whereas I recreated it at the begining of the project. The CP is different too.
You can see my Cockpit here:
http://perso.orange.fr/fabrice.montupet/arcade/starwars/index.htm
The site is in mainly in French (There is one English page for this time). You can directly access to the gallery here:
http://perso.orange.fr/fabrice.montupet/arcade/starwars/galerie.htm

I am sorry if my english language is poor, I am French.

Best greetings,
Fabrice

Hi!

Thank you very very much!  :)

I will put additional pictures of my SW Cockpit this week ^^
The system runs under MS-Windows 2000pro including instead of the Windows Shell a little graphical full screen tool that I programmed in C on which I can choose to launch the 1983 SW Atari game or the excellent games "Battle Of Yavin" and  "Battle of Endor" by  Bruno R. Marcos

Best greetings from France,

You did a GREAT job.  :applaud: I like the clever layout of artwork. Very good use of individual pieces to make up the whole theme.
This reminds me of my diy projector hobby. Us Americans, Aussies, and Brits thought we were doing some awesome stuff, then up comes along a French diy projector site that absolutely blows everything we do to dust. :laugh2:

Have you tried to play "The Last Starfighter" on this cabinet?   I wonder if it would work with a Star Wars yoke ...

Thank you very much!! :D

I don't think that rebuild this SW Cockpit was very hard,  I especially needed many patience , many researches and.... time! :)
Yes, the Yoke (from scratch too) works with all game that use Standard PC game port.
I tried these GameCube games, they are excellents! :-) May be, one day, I will modify my Yoke to be GameCube compatible too, or I will rebuild one.
Many buttons/ switches that I have  installed on the CP have not yet attribution. So, it will be easy to add and adapt other games for the Cockpit :)

What?
That definitely needs more elaboration. How exactly did you build your own yoke? Please share, there are lots of us that would like to know.

Hello!  :)
I have seen, one day, the Sidewinder Hack. It didn't suit me because this hack uses an original Yoke. As I decided to entirely recreate one, the sidewinder wasn't useful.
During the construction of the SW Cockpit, I have created three Yokes. The first two ones didn't please me: at the beginning of the construction,  I haven't enough pictures of the original to guess its measures. So, the results were not good. Only the third one seemed to me correct.
The PC game port is really simple to use. I only needed two 200K linear potentiometers  for the X and Y axis and switches directly connected to the Game Port. As we can see on my page:
http://perso.orange.fr/fabrice.montupet/arcade/starwars/tabl/tabl6.htm
I just took a picture for you, which shows  the X  axis:
http://perso.orange.fr/fabrice.montupet/arcade/im76.jpg

You can also see a line of buttons, directly wired on a keyboard controller (at this day, they correspond to the keys Escape , Up,Down, Enter, Space and Control (the seventh button has not attribution yet)
These seven buttons are the grey buttons on the CP, above the Yoke.

I will detail (with pictures) the Yoke on the  website, next days :)

Best Greetings from France,
Fabrice

Thanks Fabrice.  I was actually asking about whether the original Star Wars yoke will work with those games using an interface like the Sidewinder hack.
