Let's have a friendly wager! (DHL bill came for $12)
« on: August 01, 2007, 09:56:14 am »
Would anyone like to join the wager on when it will arrive?  Place your virtual bets please.

I ordered two u360's from Ultimarc on Fri, July 27/07, 12:30pm EST.  I got a confirmation email from Ultimarc on Mon, July 30/07, 1:15pm EST.  I got a tracking number for DHL from Ultimarc on Tues, July 31/07 4:03am EST, and this is what follows so far from DHL:

     2007-08-01 10:41 Depart Facility LONDON-HEATHROW, GB
2007-08-01 06:32 Arrived at DHL Facility LONDON-HEATHROW, GB
2007-08-01 02:54 Depart Facility EAST MIDLANDS, GB
2007-07-31 23:17 Arrived at DHL Facility EAST MIDLANDS, GB
     2007-07-31 19:53 Depart Facility LONDON-HEATHROW, GB
     2007-07-31 16:33 Processed at Origin LONDON-HEATHROW, GB

The joysticks appear to be doing a figure eight in Great Britain!

BTW, final destination should be St. Agatha, Ontario, Canada.

I've always had good luck with DHL. My first experience with them was with Ultimarc, and I was amazed that I had stuff from London to the Eastern US in less than a week. Haven't used them recently, but it sounds like they're experiencing some major growth related issues. They used to the (relatively) small shipper that could get something delivered anywhere in the world. Now they have partnerships with the USPS etc. that has elevated their size and overhead by a huge amount.

Still, it could just be a tracking oddity.

I live in Australia, and I know that if I order from Ultimarc on Friday then I'll get my order the following Friday (ie 1 week), when I'll be at home with the kids.  So I always order on a Friday!  Like clockwork :)
Check out my completed projects!

As much as I loathe UPS,  90% of the time I order from Hong Kong at Midnight,  I have my item by Noon the next day (meaning 36 hours not 12)...36 hours from Hong Kong to Idaho is pretty damn spanky.

Now,  I have encountered an "exception" twice now...but BOTH TIMES the shipment was 1 day later than usual and BOTH TIMES I got a 100% refund (has come to $99 in refund thus far!).

As much as I loathe DHL, my ultimarc order was in london one day, and on my doorstep in the usa the next.

BTW, final destination should be St. Agatha, Ontario, Canada.

My stuff from Andy usually arrives in Toronto 3-4 days after I place my order.

Assuming that DHL delivers regularly to St Agatha (outside of K-W, right ?) and taking into account the holiday weekend ... my bet would be for delivery on the 7th.

On the UPS topic, while I have no problem with UPS per se, I do have a problem with their $30 brokerage fee for shipments from the US into Canada.

What holiday???  Does it call for the customary consuming of cold adult beverages?

I'll wager for the 6th, taking the long odds that it was a tracking snafu and don't know of any holiday.

I called them just now and it is here.  It didn't make it on a truck for delivery today but they will hold it and I can pick it up anytime until 7pm.  The DHL facility is in Waterloo, 5 km from my place.  They didn't have the broker fee calculated yet so we will see what that may be later.  Oh, boy, oh boy!

Disturbed013,

The holiday is here in Canada on Monday, August 6 and is called the "Civic" holiday.  You are welcome to celebrate it too, but you may not get paid for the time off though.

All that wagered,

Wagers are closed.  No one was dead on but it appears that without going over, TOK and FrizzleFried got it closest.  It's a tie because TOK bet less than a week and FrizzleFried bet both 1.5 days and 2.5 days.  Do weekends count in the days?  I don't know and I don't care.  Virtual prizes have been updated in your account.

BTW, there were no extra fees on the delivery.

AND, the contents were correct and intact after a quick look.

Just wait ... I've had DHL send me invoices up to a year later on some things (and not on others).

Yes I have had DHL hand me my package and send me a bill a couple of months later.   Credit to them is that the bill has never been outragous or unreasonable unlinke Universal Pissy Shipping and their brokerage charges to Canada.  Even Canada Post is more reasonalble and they are Government!

The back & forth is not the package PHYSICALLY going back n forth. It's just paperwork going between departments.

DHL update.  I got the bill the other day and it was around $12 for broker fee and duty.  Not bad I guess.

Are you sure about that?  I don't know DHL labels, but for UPS, I was under the impression that labels are scanned at each stop they make, thus the various arrival and departure scans.  I doubt that DHL displays the separate tracking information for paperwork.  As it's been shown here, it doesn't make DHL look very organized when someone's tracking a package.
