What's your favorite 2P stand-up cabinet design?
« on: July 27, 2007, 04:00:39 pm »
I guess I'm looking for opinions on what would make a nice MAME specific cabinet with the frankenpanel of 6 buttons per player, a 3" trackball and a spinner...  any thoughts?  I like the Project Arcade, Neon Mame, Woody and MKII designs...

Mortal Kombat 1 or 2 are great, in fact I've just built one.

Yeah, I love the MK1/2 design. It's a universal cab that still has a lot of character, and I find that it's the design most people think of when they think about arcade gaming. It's a really iconic cab that defines the arcades of my youth (the 80's and early 90's, my golden age of arcade gaming).

...not a two player cabinet, but still:

I'd just modify the already great Centipede design... A few more inches of width and maybe a slightly curved CP to accommodate all the stuff ..and it'd still look awesome?

Maybe..

as the french say, chacun à son goût ("each one has his taste"). i've always liked the defender cabinet. if i ever make or buy a cab, it'll probably be that shape, with whatever alterations are required to fit a slikstik classic control panel.

Artifact ;)

... basically kind of like centipede but a bit larger.

I do *not* like the "big box" design of MK ... that's just me... gotta have those curves, and that recessed CP design :)

I was going to build a mk3 cabinet when I first got into this. I had a deal for $150 for the complete cabinet with monitor working. (that was 4 years ago). I was going to buy it, but the same guy had this Jamma cabinet that was set up for some 2 player 6 button fighter with no side art, controls, or board. It did include the 34" monitor and the Jamma harness. The cabinet is made out of plywood instaid of particle board. I reworked the control panel to still retain the same control configuration, but have room for more stuff - trackball, more buttons, etc. I attached a pic of before and after the cpanel mod.
The moral of the story is, you should find a cab that you like to look at. You can always modify the cpanel to accommodate more players, controls, etc. Just a little imagination - that's part of the fun!!

The MK-style cabinets are just a great design. The control panel has plenty of room for controls while keeping similar dimensions and silhouette of a classic cab. I just wish it wasn't all boxy. The Gauntlet Legends cab was a nice revision with the curved front corners. Much more stylish. The larger marquee was also a nice improvement.

While having a similar design concept, it's definitely more attractive with the angled front panels. The white laminate on these also stood out nicely. The chrome t-molding always annoyed me, though.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

I just laid some new chrome T-molding too but my control panel was removed and I made a 15-1/2" front to back  X 42" left to right 2 player but 6 button but there is plenty of room for my trackball and spinner I am adding soon the origanal panel was even to small for 2 players I got tired of toaching the 2nd player trying to squeeze in on the control panel but there is plenty of room now.

my origanal plan was to paint it so I started to sand it with a really fine sand paper and after I sanded it all and wiped it down it made it look new new again so I just left it sanded super smooth and scrapped the paint idea becuase it no longer needs it.

Total Carnage machine for me.

It's basically a Midway MK cabinet with some tweaks.
