Worth changing processors?
« on: July 24, 2007, 09:53:23 pm »
I have a 3 year old AMD 4000+ running my cab, does fine except it does lag sound when playing KI2 and War gods.

I just got a brand new 3800+ for another dvd burning pc.

I heard processors slow down overtime, do you think this new 3800+ is noticably faster than the 4000+ being its brand new or do you think it would be so
minimal if it was that I shouldnt even bother.

I don't think you would really notice a difference in speed. Just my 2 cents...

Any slowdown on a computer would be caused by software, not cpu.  Virus, spyware/adware, corrupted drivers cause slowdowns.  This can be fixed by reinstalling windows or trying System Restore.  Make sure that other hardware (like old hard drive, not enough ram) does not cause bottlenecks.  Ram should be matching, including Cass Latency (CL), so the ram does not run at lower frequency than it could, etc.

In the exact same application using the exact same processor types the processor with the slower clock speed isn't faster, regardless of age. Processors do not get slower over time, computers get slower over time because of software changes and registry bloat, something which won't happen on a truly dedicated cabinet computer.

Also a 3800 and a 4000 might benchmark differently, but they are so close together in speed that you could never tell them difference between them by feel.

Try an older version of mame. Or add a sound card and disable onboard sound. On board sound is known to be a system hog.

My current set up is a Barton XP 2600+ with a SB Live Value running mame v103.

KI & KI2 work flawlessly.

I think if you did both of these suggestions as well as a good system clean up using adaware and spybot you'll notice a HUGE difference!
My old user name was marlborroman13, but I kicked the habit many years ago!

Part of the problem might be the games he listed. Are they running full speed on anything yet? I never tried them myself, but I remember those being games that were hopeless on current hardware not that long ago.

WarGods sucks so I didnt test it, but both KI and KI2 run just fine on my POS Dell Optiplex 2.4GHZ P4, even with the on board sound I had (just upgraded my desktop to a new X-FI card, so my old card went into the MAME PC)

you should clean out your registry and get rid of all the spyware you can if you cant run KI2 at full speed on an AMD 4000+ (my desktop is only an AMD64 3500+)

As someone else has mention, just doing a clean install every so often will gain you more speed.

To be 100% crystal clear...PROCESSORS DO NOT SLOW DOWN WITH TIME.  Whoever told you that is a dumbass.

The resolution you run games at could be culprit too.  Especially with a system with specs like that.  KI should run very well on that system.

It is a clean install, I think it could be the onboard sound, thanks for the recommendations.

One more thing would running from an external usb 2.0 hd slow it down also?

An external drive wouldn't make a difference once the roms are loaded...  unless we're talking CHD games.   ;)

I'd put them on the local drive personally.  CHDs get read from as needed and this is probably having an impact on your game speed  Wargods probably won't be full speed after this, but KI1+2 should run a lot better.

Also, you might just need a couple of sticks of RAM, its the one thing MAME cant get enough of, especially on CHD games =)
