This is great. The whole bottom has dropped out on computer pricing. You see the thing is that people stopped buying new computers because there is absolutely nothing a "normal" user wants to do that a 500 Mhz pc won't handle just fine.

I ONLY have a 1.2 Ghz (which I put together back when 1.4 was the best you could get), and I feel no need at all to upgrade. Sure I could put together an Athlon XP3000 now. But what the heck would I need it for? It is like the 3 hard drives (140 GB total I think) I have in my computer that I can't even fill up, even though I have every file under the sun downloaded.

Most of the time I can't even tell the difference between the Pentium 200 I use at work and my faster computers at home.

Now I do use a 486 (100 Mhz) laptop quite a bit, and on that one I CAN tell the difference. But even that is still very usable, and does MOST of what I like to do on the computer (can't play divx movies, but besides that it is great).

Heh... I remember when I bought a 286 12MHz back in college, the salesman tried to talk me into a 386 25 MHz... I remember saying "A 386?  That's a file server!  Who in the world needs that much power at home?"

I have a question on the dell deals - when the computer specs just say "integrated 3d graphics", I know that is on-board graphics - but would there be an AGP slot if I wanted to add my own card?

I just couldn't find specs on their motherboard to find out - anyone know?

I don't know about other dells with integrated graphics, but the the 2350 doesn't have an AGP slot.

I have never seen an Oem computer with an actual AGP slot.
OEMs know that anyone who knows enough care would build their own computer anyway.

I dont think Dell tells you if the MB has AGP slots or not.
Its like there is no way of knowing...
However if the case is like a micro ATX bookcase(slim) then you already know the computer doesnt have AGP slot.
Oh well...thats one good reason why I will never buy a dell !

But seriously, besides no AGP can you find a better deal for a 2.2GHz, 256 ram, 30gig hd,dvd drive, and a monitor? I already have a monitor so I could see that somewhere and get a few bucks back....

Well I have a MB with onboard video,no AGP slot. I was gonna use it for my cabinet but onboard video cant do full screen(hardware stretch).And PCI video card suck(too much money) but hey...the deal isnt too shaby.You still need to buy a PCI video card though...if you wanna play mame full screen.

Yeah.. I could build my own... Mine computer I'm running now I built. It just seems so easy to get it all together and not have to shop around so much. But I guess thats what they're selling isn't it? I bet I could find a friend with an old pci card.... but who nows... maybe i'll wait. computers only get cheaper

The Dell Dimension 4550s and up all have an AGP slot.  You can check on the specs of the Dimension computers by going to "Choose a Dimension"  - http://www.dell.com/us/en/bsd/products/series_dimen_desktops.htm, scroll down a bit and click on "Product Details" then on the "Tech Specs" tab.

Dude, don't get a dell, they use propriety parts, parts that are made to their standards by other companies, that may not, and most likley will not work on other standard computers, ie.. motherboards, processors, power supplys, I have heard many horror stories of people buying dells and then trying to swap out parts only to fry their entire computer...stay away from dell, gateway or any mass retailer that uses propriety parts... www.ibuypower.com is a site that sells good pcs at good prices, if you now what you want and need...

This is why I still use win95 on my main home PC.  It runs very fast on it and it's only a k6 166.  No kidding, it boots up and runs noticably faster than my gigahertz notebook with win2k.

But, Wintel will always win.  I uninstalled IE to try a different browser.  I liked IE better, but now I can't reinstall it because the installed checks the internet and determines that MS is killing support for win95.  Now I'm going to have to finally switch to Win98, which I don't want to do (win95 compact install=50 megs, win98 compact install=200 megs)

This means something coming from me (See my avatar picture?) Wndows 2000 is a decent OS. And is better than 95/98 hands down; in terms of stability and so on.

Xp is okay by me too even though it has a Yeti footprint, but mark my words, Longhorn will make a P3 450 even more obsolete!

I believe you can still use IE 5.5 on Windows 95.  You can't download it anymore, but if you look through your CD's, you may find an install set for it somewere, especially if you have an MSN or Earthlink install disk laying around.  I can burn you a copy on CD if necessary...

You can still use it, you just can't download copies from Microsoft:

Also. You may be able to sneak in a newer IE using an AOL install disc. I doubt AOL dropped 95 support, and last I checked their installer updated your IE to the newest version available as of when the CD shipped.

(Then you can uninstall the AOL and keep your new IE).
