calibrating game screens

I am considering buying a game that works, but needs the vid display re-calibrated..  is this just an adjustment in the power-up/setup mode?  Or is there usually a knob on the monitor that needs to be adjusted?

It would help if you described exactly what the image looked like. It could be a simple pot adjustment on the chassis, it could be a cap issue, it could be a tube issue, etc.
