Best way to use Pole Position cab as mame?
« on: July 18, 2007, 07:44:52 am »
I may be getting my hands on a PP cab, and thought it would be a good time to finally get a driving cab up and running.

I realize I can hook up the wheel to a mouse hack or optipac, but I was curious about the pedal.  If I hook up the pedal with an APAC, would that also work for games that had a "digital" pedal?  (if there were any).  I've seen people use microswitches on pedals to make it easier in mame, but what did the majority of 360 racing games use?  Pots or switches?

Bottom line, would a horiz monitor, 360 wheel (mouse hack) and APAC'd pedal suffice for the majority of 360 racing games?

Thanks,
Stobe

Hey there!
I imagine this will be moved, so I'll just reply here anyway :-)
Yes, an apac will work fine and games with analog and digital pedals will work fine.
All in all, I have maybe 20ish 360 wheel games I play on mine, though there are still some I havent set up, as they need more buttons than I'm willing to install on my CP.
Lemme know if you need any help or info on setting it all up, I have plenty of pics, etc..

Check my previous posts for more PP mame info, I had to recompile to get PP shifter suppport properly working, and added a 4 speed shifter for some more flexibility (more games)

Cool.  Some good info to know.

Did you ever compile a list of the 270 games that can be dip-switched to 360?

Also, how many more games did the 4 speed shifter buy you?  (I'm guessing mostly 270 games)

And lastly, is there any advantage to the newer style APAC (6 axis) vs the older one?  I think the older one with button inputs would be better for this project, so I could use the inputs for the shifter and eliminate the need for any other encoder, right?

Thanks again,
Stobe

Nope, never did finish the list, I can give you the list I'm using right now, but that wouldn't include some games I excluded because of the amount of buttons:-) (I'm using 1 coin, 1 start, 1 exit, and an action button used for various games (turbo, etc..))

The 4 speed got me maybe 8 more games, possibly more, but my computer is too slow for some of the nicer drivers out there. Having the 4 speed is nice though, because I can just use the left side for hi-low.

I went with the old style and other than the mouse hack for the 360 wheel, it's all I needed.
Cheers!

I wouldn't be offended by making a PP cab into something like an Xbox based driving cab... PP is one of my all time favorites but the damn thing is too hard to keep running on original hardware.

So in a round-about-way, are you saying I offended you?  :)

No.  I'm not very round-about.   :)  It was just a suggestion.

Cool.  That may be a direction for a 270 cab.

But as much as I love PP, there's only one racing game that is driving me (no pun intended) to make a 360 racing cab.

Sega's Hot Rod

Just got my PP running the other day using a mouse hack for the wheel and a microswitch on the pedal:

http://home.earthlink.net/~asumner/artsarcadelab/id41.html

I ordered the APAC because my wife wants the analogue pedal to work right...

And... I was finally able to complete the race yesterday!!! I had never done that, and I played this thing a fair amount back in the day...

Right now I am just running PP 1 and later I will look into adding more games.  For now though, this cabinet is a blast to play!!!

I made a point to keep everything so I could put it back to stock if I wanted to:-)

The only part I had to cut up was the plastic shroud with the guages, and I picked up a spare one (complete with cig. burns ), and mounted my buttons in that  ;D

Dang women.
Don't they know you're supposed to smash the gas pedal to the floor, and slow down by sliding sideways?

In answer to the original question though, an analog pedal will work on a digital game, if you remap the axis to the throttle input.

Don't forget there are some spinner games that could be fun with a bigger wheel. Cameltry and Wheel of Fortune come to mind.

Why play PP1 when you can play PP2? It's one of those games where the sequel surpasses everything about the original. I never played Hot Rod, but with the Pole Position, Sprint, and Off-Road series I'd think you'd already have a great cab.
Brevity is not my strong suit.
