Touch Screen performance with long VGA and serial cable??
« on: May 21, 2007, 06:13:10 pm »
Does anyone know if the performance of a touch screen will be affected if I use a long VGA and serial cable?  My guess is it will be about 20 feet at the most.  The reason I ask is I would like to mount my touch screen on the wall and have the case as small as possible and I could but the computer with my stereo.  What do you guys think?

Thanks

sorry if this is in the wrong forum

RS232 is dual voltage and can be run a max of about 150 feet so it will be no problem.   The VGA is very much dependant on signal quality for analog so use the best cable you can for extended runs.  Projector and other units are quite often run on 10 to 20 meter cables for video presenations in auditoriums.  So 30 to 60 feet is commonly done.  20 feet should be no problem.

RS232 is a serial cable.  Hardly used any more.  I have a 100 foot VGA cable run at an office to a plasma tv.  Works fine.

cool thanks, I just measured and will need about 35 to 40 feet total.  Any difference in using a VGA vs SVGA cable?  Newegg has both

The ones on Newegg that are called SVGA seem to be of a bit better construction.   For the best look for a cable that uses small coax for the analog signals. The tiny coax transmits signals cleaner then twisted pairs.  Your 30 ft should not require anything special.

Hey  BobA, since you seem to know your cables, if you get a chance what would you recommend from Newegg or cablestogo?  I need a SVGA and a serial cable about 35 to 40 feet.  If you don't have time, I will pick one myself.

Newegg 19.99
Cablestogo 64.99

Any thoughts?  The 19.99 ones seem ok, the Arrowmicro website says they use mini coax

Does anyone find it odd that MonoPrice.com has different pricing depending on the number of units you buy?

I'd go with the Newegg or Monoprice.   The Newegg specifically mentions using mini coax.  The Monoprice does not mention if it uses coax but it should not be a problem at 35 feet.

From monoprice's website, under specs:

Everything I have purchased from them is just as good as what you get from the overpriced monster cables at best buy.  They are probably made in the same place, just these come packeged in bubble wrap instead of a fancy package.
I even have my 50" tv hanging on a wall mount from them, really good stuff.

As for the serial cable, this should have what you are looking for.

HA-ha! I finally understand your post.  It's because the name is Monoprice (as in one price)
