IMHO you are better served using two 8-way joysticks.  I have tried to play Robotron and SmashTV using the keyboard keys and a joy and there is no way I can get the quick accurate response time needed for the advanced levels.  Even the beginning boards are hard.

You can also plug in a couple dual analog stick USB gamepads.  I find those work surprisingly well for cooperative Smash TV and Total Carnage.

I used to have a Smash TV board in my 2-player JAMMA cabinet (more of a rack of shelves, really...).

1-player was easy: I'd just use player 1's stick for move & player 2's stick for shoot.

But when I did some rewiring to try to play 2-player, using 3 buttons for each person's shoot "stick" (I know, I was short 1 button...), I'd get pretty interesting glitching.  I think the hardware or the software didn't expect you to be able to shoot in 2 opposite directions simultaneously (which you can't do w/ a stick but can do w/ a set of buttons).  I don't know if the emulated Smash TV will bug out or not, but if it does, there's no way you'll be able to play a heated game of Smash TV w/out accidentally giving the game impossible switch inputs...

well that explains alot, i did have some funny glitching, I know i could go with the player 1 and player 2 joystick route but smash isn't the same without a buddy backing you up. the dual analog works hey?? hmmm might have to try that, i just dont want too much clutter

Yep it works with one player using the gamepad and the other using the two sticks, and it even works with both players using gamepads.

You can get a nice gamepad with a retractable flat USB cable for about $20 at Wal-Mart. Nice option for something you might only occasionally use.
$6.75 the hard way-one quarter at a time.
