ATAXX Cabinet - Is it worth the price?
« on: July 08, 2007, 08:05:16 pm »
I have a chance to pick up a working Ataxx cabinet for $75.

I kind of like the game, but I'm more interested in the parts.  Some quick questions for the ALL MIGHTY BOARD...

1. Do you think I can use this 19" monitor in my Ms. Pac restoration project?  Excuse my ignorance if this is a simple question, but I'm pretty dumb when it comes to monitors.

2. Any value in the two trackballs?

3. Any value in the gutted cab?  I think it could make for a mean MAME machine if done right.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

That thing looks great.  Would take it for 75 if I was there.  By the way, you wouldn't be in Houston would you?

Sorry Green, not in Houston.

I think it looks great too.  Normally, I would snatch this up, but my better half may divorce me if I come home with another machine before I fix up/sell the others.

Right now I have 5 cabinets.  Only 2 are working.  Adding a 6th cab may push my otherwise saintly wife over the edge.  I don't want to mistake her kindness for her weakness when it comes to my arcade hobby.  Man... I know she wishes I was into stamps instead.

Then again... my working cab to total cab ratio is 2:5 (40%).
If I got this, it would bring the ratio to 3:6 (50%).

That would be some real progress!

This is a fairly uncommon game.  Sure you'd want to part it out?

No... I'm okay with keeping it a dedicated Ataxx machine.

I know it's uncommon, but do you think that makes it valuable?  I figure supply and demand only works when there is some demand.

Is this guy crazy for selling it at $75?  Am I crazy for not snatching it up?

I almost bought that Ataxx myself...Lakeside if I remember correctly.  I decided on a VS Excitebike instead.  He was asking $100 then.

I'd grab that game in a heartbeat. It's an attractive cab (with all of the curves) that would probably look better in the house than many cabs. The game's pretty decent too.

If you really WANT to part it out, Ataxx uses a standard-resolution monitor, so providing the frame will fit (or you can swap the tube and chassis if you have a frame for Ms Pac), it should work in a Ms. Pac. Maybe you could swap the monitor over and get Ms Pac working to earn you some brownie points while you hunt down a monitor to put back in Ataxx. Once you put a monitor into Ms Pac I wouldn't plan on using it for much else as burn-in will probably start setting in. Normally, I'd say a puzzle game is usually a much more wife-safe purchase, but with the alien goo theme, I'm not sure this one would go over quite as well.

If it weren't for the 19" monitor, I'm sure that cabinet would have been destined for a Golden Tee conversion.

The FLYER has a bit better picture of the original cabinet.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

The company I used to work for had a GT Ataxx conversion.  I hated that thing.  Whoever did it did a sucky job.
