A moment of severe terror

I'm doing some reading on woodshop safety as I prepare to take on some projects.  I'm betting that when this guy got his breath back, he experienced a moment of sheer horrifying terror before realizing the blood was only from his thumb.

"I was ripping a narrow piece of pine about two feet long, without a push stick. As the wood was going through the blade I was watching the far end to keep it against the fence and ran my thumb into the blade, cutting ¼-inch off the tip. When I felt the blade hit my finger I jerked my hand out, clutched it with my other hand and started to jump up and down just as the saw fired the wood my way, striking me squarely in the privates."

I'm always afraid of the "two cases of bolts loosening up" idea. I can only imagine what happens when the blade comes loose somehow.

When I was a kid my aunt once told how the drum from her washing machine came loose, wrecking her furniture. I never looked the same at a washing machine running it's drum at 1200 to 1500 rpm.

My uncle actually lost 4 fingers on his saw table. He wanted to check if the motor wasn't overheating.

I was using a woodshaper (industrial type) and unfortunately, they don't kick the wood out when it binds.  They pull the wood in.  My hand went under the guard and I lost my ring, middle and index finger at the first knuckle down from the fingernails on my left hand.  Luckily, I'm right handed.

I now have the most expensive home entertainment center you can imagine.

That is one great benefit.  I does make you realize though how important finger nails are as armor against all kids of little things.

It took about a year for my brain to learn where my "new" finger tips were.  Now, I can type and play the piano like nothing happened.  The only time it is a hassle is when I'm trying to tie my son's shoes.  For some reason, I can tie my fine but not someone elses.

Something that amazed me is that I took off a good chunk of my pinky finger in this accident too but it grew back and looks normal.  I probably took  off close to a 1/4 of an inch.

I did that too last year with a serrated knife, basically topped the finger down to the tip of the bone (almost).  I'll be darned if it didn't all but grow back.  It's not shaped exactly as before, but close

Oh, and nice entertainment cab, even at the high price (sorry bout the fingers).  GREAT choice on plasma too....I have a commercial panny 42" panel -> was my first plasma

That is about where I took it down to also.  The hand surgeon didn't touch it.  He just dressed and said to leave it alone.  Came out okay.

Mine is a commercial Panasonic 42 also.  Got at DTV city about 5 years ago.  I've never had any problems with it and it still looks great.

I'm planning on moving it to my bedroom and getting a newer model for the living room.

Probably got the twin of mine...I bought mine from Visual Apex (because they were local) and it's been great.  Mine's a 5UY series, a buddy of mine bought a 6UY.  Mine did get moved into the bedroom and replaced with a newer model....wait, shouldn't I get a "newer model" in the bedroom
