Ivan stewart with pole position wheels?
« on: July 05, 2007, 04:28:04 pm »
Would that set up work, if I used the pole position wheels and connected them to the ivan stewart pcb?  Also what would be a good place to get some pedals for one of these?

Maybe.  It depends on how many teeth the PP wheel passes through the sensor per revolution.  On an Ivan wheel, it is geared so that more teeth pass creating more resolution.  It has 60 teeth on the wheel (drive) shaft, 14 teeth on the 'encoder' (driven) shaft.  The encoder shaft has an encoder wheel that has 36 teeth on it.  So for one revolution of the wheel, ~154 teeth pass through the encoder.  60/14*36=~154

Why not just get some ivan wheels?  I've seen them on ebay for about 20-30USD...

IXNAY on the Bey-AY-AY.

I think the PP wheels would work great...
 ;D

If I happened to quickly run down to my basement and count the teeth, not that I have two PP wheels down there, or anything... by a quick count/ estimate I would say it looks like the same tooth count.

Of course that would only be if I happened to have two PP wheels for sale... not that I do. Because if I did, the proper thing would be to recuse myself from this discussion due to a conflict of interest.

Tomorrow I can compare the mounting flange bolt patterns, and also tell you how deep the gear/ encoder are on the PP wheels.

in the meantime, here's a picture of the gear/encoder assy. Is this the same setup on an Ivan wheel?

Nope and Nope and Nope again.  Ivan wheels have a different optic board than Pole wheels.  Different # of wires going to the main PCB, different kind of signal traveling them.  Not interchangeable.  Pole wheels are good for MAME, Ivan wheels are only good for use with a real Ivan PCB, unless you change out the optics.  And changing out the optics on a wheel with a cup-shaped encoder is not a simple swap.

Also of note, there are two types of Ivan wheels.  One type with a cup-shaped encoder wheel and one with a flat disc shaped encoder.  The little tiny gears on the flat type strip easily and so those are often worn out and useless when you get them.
