Happs pushbutton color shade
« on: April 22, 2003, 09:15:50 pm »
Ok, hopefully simple question for those of you that have bought some happs pushbuttons.  What is the shade of the pushbottons?  Specifically, the blue and purple?

Is the blue a light blue(similar to mame logo) or blueblue?
Same with the purple, light purple(similar to flame in modified Mame marquee) or a darker shade of purple?

I don't know if is the digital cameras used, but out of all the cabinet examples on the web that say they use happ buttons the colors aren't always the same.  I plan to design my control panels following the excellent examples of Motorfish and AceTKK.  In Motorfish's, the picture seems to have a couple light purple's(mouse buttons) and then mostly blues next to the joysticks.  Thanks for the help.

I have both the blue and the purple and neither would be considered "light".  They look like primary kids colors, just your basic blue and purple, no funky shades or anything like that.

Many photos of the buttons make them look much lighter because of the camera flash.  This can also cause differences in appearance because of different cameras and light levels when the photos are taken.  Here's a photo of a blue button next to another shade of blue for comparison.

I have a bag of purple buttons somewhere, but naturally I can't find them right now...  Here's a photo I had of some purple buttons that were taken in relatively low light, so they are pretty representative of their true color.  If anything, they are just slightly lighter in this photo than they truly are.

Thanks to all who replied, I was curious about the same things but didn't think of a way to ask.   ;)

I have the blue and purple buttons, and Bob Robert's picture is very accurate for both colors. Oscar's blue button pic is dead on, and, as he says, his purple pic is a tad light.

If you want to be sure, get the buttons before finalizing your art.

Other than that I agree with the posts above.  The pics of the blue are dead on, but Oscar's purple is light.

I care and the guy who wrote the post cares!  And I remebered the RED being brighter than what Bob Roberts shows, which your pic shows.

Thanks!!!

Well I will definitely pick some up before my finishing my artwork, but here's another quick question.

From reading the forum, and please tell me if I am wrong, the competition buttons are the prefered button.  But everyone's pictures seem to show that they are not using the competition buttons.

Could it be that besides getting the horizontal microswitch this isn't as big of a deal?

I don't understand the last question?

However, you are wrong, the competition buttons are NOT the preferred button.  Comp are convex (dished out) and have a lighter spring and shorter throw.  Chtuluke (sp?) likes them for fighter games and they were used on a few japanese fighter cabs.

By far the most popular button on the forum is the Happ pushbutton with Horizontal microswitch, which is more of a traditional arcade buttton and is concave (dished in).  1Up recommends taking the internal spring out of these and using the microswitch internal spring only, but this got mixed reviews on the board, and I don't know if I would like it long term or not.  You can always test it and put the spring back in if it's not what you want, though.

What mean you?  I don't think they are mutually exclusive...

The horizontal microswitch kind is preferred over the vertical microswitch kind.   The competitions (convex button faces) are preferred by people who are used to them (or buy them for increased button mashing performance in fighters)...

The concave buttons (horiz or verticle microswitch) look like the buttons I remember/associate with arcade games so that's why I used them in my project (and why most people who choose concave choose them for similiar reasons)

Does that makes sense/explain it sorta (I wasn't clear on  what you were exactly asking)?

Doh!!!  I should really read my messages before posting them or at least complete my thought.  Sorry about that.  The good news is everyone's answered my last question which is the prefered button is the 58-91XXX Series from Happs.  Thanks again everyone.

My CP has competition buttons(and joysticks).  They're not as authentic, but I prefer them.  They feel more responsive, if you know what I mean.

BASSOFeeSH: what is the red ball top joystick in the center of your panel? (who make it, where did it come from?)

Ultimarc Controls

J-Stik (Japanese) Ball-Top

Quote
These two Japanese sticks are the type used in most Japanese cabinets such as the Sega Naomi and other modern cabs. They have a light spring pressure for really fast movements.
The travel on these is longer (same as Happ super) and has two selectable settings, available by turning over the restrictor plate, which has a chamfered hole. Another nice feature is the long switch actuators which allow exact "tuning" of the switch sensitivity with careful use of long-nosed pliers. Operates in 8-way or true 4-way mode by rotating the restrictor.
Available in red only.

The throw's longer than the 4-ways you'll see at the arcades, but this stick is more versitile & easier to mount.

all of ultimarcs joysticks in my opinion are simply the best ones out there.  some people odnt like the short throw of the t stick but i think it is awesome.  I hav a j stick also and it is great.  nice feel and doesn't seem to be made out of recycled pez dispensers.
